Zambia Tourism Soars with Record International Arrivals and Revenue Growth, Driven by their Business Tourism, Infrastructure and Sustainable Strategy
Zambia tourism sees record international arrivals and revenue growth, fueled by business tourism, infrastructure improvements and a sustainable tourism strategy
According to the Zambia Tourism Agency, Zambia has, for the first time, received 2.2 million international arrivals in 2024. The country is set to surpass its 2025 target of 2.4 million visitors on the back of a mix of policy reforms, expanded marketing efforts, and an improving tourism infrastructure. The tourism sector in Zambia had recorded 2 million visitors by October 2025, indicating continued upward momentum in its growing market.
Rodney Sikumba, Tourism Minister for Zambia, attributed growth in the tourism sector to a raft of new policy initiatives that involved increased marketing efforts in India, China, and the Gulf, coupled with efforts towards expanding air connectivity and improving tourism infrastructure. These have not only helped increase international tourist inflows but have also resulted in job creation and economic diversification, thus laying a solid foundation for continued development of Zambia as a prime tourism destination in Southern Africa.
Business Tourism: Key Driver for Zambia’s Tourism Revenue
A central component of Zambia’s tourism growth is its success in attracting business travelers. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Regional Index, Zambia ranks first in Southern Africa for business tourism spending, with business tourism expenditure accounting for 63% of total tourism revenue—more than double the continental average. This significant contribution from business tourism is driven by Zambia’s emerging role as a key destination for conferences, corporate events, and meetings in the region.
The Zambia Tourism Agency has also worked on strengthening Zambia’s MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) calendar, attracting international corporate events, trade shows, and conferences to the country. The increase in business tourism spending further boosts Zambia’s local economies, creating jobs in the hospitality, conference services, and transportation industries. This growth also underscores the importance of business tourism as a sustainable revenue stream for the country’s long-term economic diversification.
Strategic Investments in Infrastructure and Key Tourist Sites
In line with Zambia’s tourism growth, the government is investing heavily in infrastructure upgrades across the country. More than US$100 million has been allocated to improve tourism-related infrastructure, including the development of new airports, road networks, and the revitalization of key tourist destinations. Kasaba Bay, Livingstone, Sioma Ngwezi, Liuwa Plain, and the Lower Zambezi are just a few of the priority sites being upgraded to attract more visitors and enhance the tourism experience.
These infrastructure developments are crucial in providing better accessibility to Zambia’s natural wonders and wildlife reserves, which are central to the country’s eco-tourism offerings. The improved transport connections will also make it easier for international tourists to explore Zambia’s diverse landscapes, including its savannahs, national parks, and rivers, further establishing Zambia as a premier eco-tourism destination.
Sustainable Tourism: Preserving Zambia’s Natural Heritage for Future Generations
Sustainability is a key focus in Zambia’s tourism development strategy. The country’s commitment to eco-tourism aligns with global trends toward more sustainable travel and green tourism practices. Zambia’s tourism authorities are working with local stakeholders to create eco-friendly experiences for travelers, ensuring that Zambia’s unique ecosystems—including its wetlands, forests, and wildlife—are preserved for future generations.
Zambia is positioning itself as a sustainable tourism leader in Africa, offering low-impact travel options such as safaris, nature walks, and cultural tours that highlight the importance of conservation while supporting local communities. These sustainable practices are designed to create economic benefits for local residents while protecting the natural heritage that draws tourists to the country in the first place.
Employment and Economic Opportunities in Zambia’s Tourism Sector
The tourism sector plays a crucial role in job creation in Zambia. Currently, the sector employs 473,000 people, and this figure is projected to rise to 613,000 by 2034, further emphasizing the potential of tourism as an economic driver. The growth of Zambia’s tourism industry provides a wide range of employment opportunities in areas such as hospitality, guiding services, transportation, and local artisan crafts.
Additionally, the government’s focus on tourism infrastructure and sustainable development ensures that the tourism sector continues to be a key source of income for local communities, helping to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on traditional industries.
Expanding Zambia’s International Appeal: Marketing and Promotion
The Zambia Tourism Agency is ramping up its international marketing efforts, targeting key markets such as the UK, North America, Germany, and South Africa. This promotional push aims to raise awareness of Zambia’s diverse tourism offerings, from its world-famous Victoria Falls to its less-explored gems like Liuwa Plain National Park. By highlighting Zambia’s unique cultural experiences, wildlife conservation efforts, and eco-tourism initiatives, the agency hopes to attract more international tourists, boosting Zambia’s profile as a must-visit destination in Africa.
The growing international recognition of Zambia’s tourism industry will also help the country tap into emerging tourism markets in Asia and the Middle East, expanding its reach and attracting a broader range of travelers who seek affordable and authentic travel experiences.
Future Tourism Growth: A Bright Path for Zambia’s Tourism Sector
Looking to the future, Zambia’s tourism sector is positioned for continued growth. With a projected annual growth rate of 15.4% in tourism revenue by 2033, the country is on track to become a top tourism destination in Southern Africa and beyond. By continuing to invest in sustainable tourism, infrastructure development, and eco-friendly practices, Zambia can ensure that its tourism sector remains both economically vibrant and environmentally responsible.
As tourist arrivals increase, the tourism industry will play a key role in diversifying Zambia’s economic base and generating new jobs, all while promoting local culture and conservation. With support from both the government and private sector, Zambia’s future in global tourism looks incredibly promising.
Zambia’s Tourism Sector on Track for Long-Term Success
Zambia boasts record-breaking tourist arrivals and shows a strong growth trajectory in tourism revenues, therefore making the sector’s sustained success almost guaranteed in the upcoming years. The country’s commitment to issues such as sustainability, cultural preservation, and economic diversification means that tourism will continue to emerge as one of the significant contributors toward economic growth, hence creating new opportunities for local communities while maintaining a key focus on environmental stewardship.
With the continued enhancement of Zambia’s tourism infrastructure, marketing efforts, and global reach, it is well on its way to becoming one of Africa’s most exciting and sustainable destinations for international travelers, a factor that will continue to cement it as a leader within world tourism.
