Wabtec Invests Over Three Million US Dollars in Brazil to Expand Contagem Plant with New Locomotive Production Line and Engineering Centre
Wabtec invests R$20m in Brazil, expanding its Contagem plant with a new production line and opening a Global Engineering Centre.
Wabtec has announced a strategic investment of R$20 million (approximately $US 3.8 million) to expand its operations in Brazil. This expansion aims to strengthen the company’s engineering and manufacturing capabilities to better serve the growing demand for rail infrastructure and services in the region. A key part of the investment will involve the establishment of a new production line at Wabtec’s Contagem plant in Minas Gerais, which will increase the company’s production capacity by 28%.
The expansion comes at a critical time as Wabtec seeks to enhance its role in the South American rail sector and ensure it can meet the demands of both local and international customers. With this new investment, Wabtec continues to affirm its commitment to strengthening its position in the Latin American market, which has seen increased interest in advanced locomotive technologies.
New Production Line at Contagem Plant
Wabtec’s Contagem plant in Minas Gerais has been an integral part of its operations in Brazil, producing high-performance locomotives for various freight and passenger operators. This plant has notably built the ES44ACi locomotives used by Brazilian freight operator MRS, demonstrating Wabtec’s capability to produce cutting-edge rail technology.
The new production line at Contagem will enhance Wabtec’s ability to meet growing demand in the region by increasing manufacturing capacity by 28%. The additional production capacity will allow the company to deliver more locomotives and related rail infrastructure components to customers in Brazil and other South American countries. This expansion is seen as a major step in Wabtec’s strategy to enhance its regional presence and offer more diverse rail solutions for freight operators in the region.
Launch of Global Engineering Centre in Latin America
Alongside the new production line, Wabtec is also establishing its first Global Engineering Centre in Latin America at the Contagem site. This 9000m² facility will be dedicated to research and development (R&D), focusing on supporting projects in both Brazil and international markets. The engineering centre will house laboratories and workstations for up to 300 engineering positions, and recruitment is already underway to fill these roles.
The new centre will allow Wabtec to undertake significant R&D initiatives, including the development of new locomotive models and solutions for regional transportation challenges. It will also serve as a hub for innovation, helping to drive Wabtec’s technological advancement in the rail industry, particularly in Latin America, where rail transport is expected to see continued growth.
Logistics Centres to Support Growth
In addition to the new production and engineering facilities, Wabtec plans to open two new logistics centres later this year, further expanding its footprint in Brazil. These centres will be located in Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, and Monte Alto, São Paulo, strategically positioning the company to better serve a variety of business areas, including infrastructure maintenance equipment, digital intelligence, and rail components. These centres will not only support regional operations but also provide logistics solutions to meet growing demand in emerging markets such as Australia and Uruguay.
Wabtec’s Confidence in Brazil’s Growth Potential
Danilo Miyasato, the president and regional leader of Wabtec Latin America, expressed his confidence in Brazil’s market potential, noting that the company’s investment demonstrates its long-term commitment to the region. “This expansion demonstrates our confidence in the Brazil market and the region’s growth potential,” Miyasato said. The increased production volume and diversified locomotive deliveries will help Wabtec meet the needs of regional customers while also enabling the company to enter new markets.
With the expanded production and engineering capabilities, Wabtec is well-positioned to contribute to Brazil’s rail industry growth and meet the increasing demand for sustainable rail transportation in the region.
