FLEM Magaluf 2026 Brings Global Writers and New Cultural Experiences to Mallorca This Autumn

The “FLEM” Festival returns to Mallorca on 1 October 2026, this time with Anna Hope and Lara Pawson as the featured British authors. “FLEM” brings together its international authors, artists, musicians and creators for four days of immersive cultural experiences. All this year’s festivities will take place over four days and will include more than 30 authors and creatives. “FLEM” strives to present literature in new forms by presenting performances, dialogues, artistic experiences and other mediums. The festivities will help support Mallorca’s efforts to build its cultural Arts district by drawing a different series of visitors to enjoy its beautiful fall landscape and stimulate the local economy.

Having attracted more than 10,000 visitors in 2025, FLEM has established itself as one of the most important literary gatherings in the Balearic Islands and one of the Mediterranean’s most distinctive cultural festivals. Supported by the Calvià council, the event is playing a growing role in Magaluf’s transformation by expanding its identity beyond its traditional summer tourism reputation and encouraging visitors to explore the destination during the autumn season.

The 2026 edition will introduce several major developments, including a new seafront venue, the launch of the festival’s first writers’ residency and the introduction of the FLEM Magaluf Novel Prize, offering a €10,000 award to support emerging literary talent.

FLEM 2026 Welcomes Leading British and International Literary Voices

FLEM’s 2026 programme will feature an impressive international line-up, with British writers forming a key part of the festival’s literary offering. Novelist Anna Hope will bring her acclaimed storytelling to Magaluf, following the success of works including Wake, The Ballroom and Expectation, which have been translated into more than 20 languages.

Her latest novel, Albion, explores themes of family, inheritance, privilege, climate change and national identity through the story of three siblings returning to their family estate after their father’s death. The book continues Hope’s exploration of personal relationships and wider social issues through ambitious literary narratives.

Joining Hope will be British writer Lara Pawson, a former BBC World Service correspondent whose work crosses the boundaries between fiction, autobiography and essay. Her latest book, Spent Light, was shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize 2024 and recognised among the year’s notable books by major literary publications. Pawson’s writing examines memory, violence, history and the relationship between personal experience and wider social change.

British author Ben Brooks will also participate in the festival, adding to the strong UK presence at the 2026 edition.

The programme will also welcome American author Anna Todd, creator of the globally successful After series. Todd will make her only appearance in Spain at FLEM following the release of her latest novel Sunrise. El último amanecer, which is set in Mallorca. Her participation creates a unique connection between her storytelling and the island where the festival takes place.

Afghan German author Aria Aber will also appear exclusively in Spain at FLEM following the publication of her debut novel Good Girl. The book, nominated for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, explores themes of identity, migration, memory and belonging through the experiences of a young Afghan German woman in Berlin.

FLEM Expands Literature Through Music, Art and Immersive Experiences

FLEM is built around the idea of “expanded literature”, creating experiences that allow books and ideas to move beyond conventional author presentations. The festival combines literature with music, visual arts, digital creativity and live performances to create a wider cultural experience for visitors.

The 2026 programme will include literary discussions, readings, live podcast recordings, concerts, book signings and artistic performances. One of the festival’s most recognised concepts, the Secret Rooms, will once again transform hotel spaces into creative environments featuring installations, workshops, DJ performances and interactive experiences.

This year’s Secret Rooms will showcase the work of several leading artists, including Mallorca-based artist Tamara K. Lloyd-Cox, multidisciplinary illustrator Lyona, art director Belén Segarra, Madrid urban art collective Boa Mistura, artists presented in collaboration with Fundació Miró Mallorca, and Mallorcan visual artist and tattooist Nil Marqués.

The festival will also feature a performance by Rodrigo Cuevas, winner of Spain’s National Award for Current Music, alongside live podcasts, concerts, literary sessions and creative showcases.

Taking place during the UK’s National Year of Reading in 2026, FLEM offers British travellers an opportunity to experience Mallorca through a cultural lens, combining literature, travel and artistic discovery beyond the traditional summer holiday season.

FLEM Moves to a New Seafront Location as Festival Continues to Grow

The 2026 edition will mark a significant milestone as FLEM moves to INNSiDE Wave Calvià, a new seafront venue located just 200 metres from the location that hosted the festival’s first five editions.

The move reflects the rapid growth of an event launched in 2021 with two main ambitions: introducing literature to wider audiences and positioning Magaluf as a destination connected with creativity, culture and originality.

Over previous editions, FLEM has welcomed internationally recognised writers including Irvine Welsh, Siri Hustvedt, Helen Fielding, Caitlin Moran, Dolly Alderton and Sheena Patel, alongside leading Spanish and Balearic literary and artistic figures.

The festival’s international profile has also been strengthened through partnerships with cultural organisations, including the British Council, supporting greater collaboration between global creative communities.

FLEM Launches New Residency and Novel Prize to Support Emerging Writers

The sixth edition of FLEM will expand its contribution to the literary world with the introduction of its first writers’ residency programme. During September, two writers — one creating in English and one in Catalan — will be invited to Magaluf to develop new projects while participating in a programme focused on cultural exchange, creativity and collaboration.

The first residency edition will welcome writers Mar Picó and Amani Saeed, providing them with a dedicated environment to develop new literary ideas.

FLEM will also introduce the FLEM Magaluf Novel Prize in partnership with Reservoir Books and the Ajuntament de Calvià. The first competition attracted more than 170 manuscript submissions from aspiring novelists.

The winning writer will be announced during the festival’s opening ceremony on 1 October. The prize includes €10,000, publication through Reservoir Books and a national promotional tour designed to support the author’s future career.
