UK’s Kent Train Line Closures Over October Half-Term: What Passengers Need to Know

The Kent railway network will see significant disruptions during the upcoming October half-term break due to essential improvement works. Passengers travelling between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings, as well as between Bexhill-on-Sea and Hastings, will experience closures and rail replacement services from October 25 to November 2, 2025. These planned disruptions are aimed at upgrading key infrastructure along the line.

Essential Upgrade Works to Take Place During the Closure

The scheduled improvements will involve vital upgrades to tunnels, track beds, and embankments, impacting both Southeastern and Southern services. Among the most critical works planned are the repair and maintenance of two tunnels near St Leonards Warrior Square station. Engineers will replace sections of track and conduct drainage improvements within the ‘Bo Peep’ and Hastings tunnels to prevent leaks that have been damaging railway equipment.

Track Replacements and Embankment Stabilisation

At the same time, other major works will include replacing almost one kilometre of old rails, sleepers, and ballast between Etchingham station and Mountfield tunnel. These improvements are expected to reduce delays and prevent future faults along the track. The railway track bed between Castle Bridge and Riverhall will also be overhauled to increase stability.

Track switches at Frant station and Wadhurst tunnel will undergo refurbishment, and the track circuits, responsible for detecting train locations, will also be replaced. Along with these, embankments and cuttings near Frant and Wadhurst stations will undergo stabilisation work to improve long-term track safety and reliability.

Vegetation Clearing and Station Enhancements

Vegetation clearing will take place at several points along the lines to ensure the safety and reliability of the track. Additionally, the footbridge at West St Leonards station will undergo refurbishment, though passengers will not face significant disruptions.

Rail Replacement Services and Travel Information for Passengers

As a result of these works, rail replacement buses will operate in place of Southeastern trains between Tunbridge Wells and Hastings and Southern trains between Bexhill and Hastings. Passengers have been urged to plan ahead and check National Rail Enquiries or their train operator’s website for up-to-date travel information.

From October 11 to October 19, rail replacement buses will also operate during weekends between Bexhill and Ashford International. Specific train replacements on these weekends include buses replacing trains between Battle and Hastings on Saturday, October 11, and between Robertsbridge and Hastings on Sunday, October 12. On the following weekend, buses will again replace trains between Battle and Hastings on Saturday, October 18, and Saturday, October 19.

Enhancements to Customer Experience

To help mitigate the impact on passengers, Southeastern customers will be able to use their tickets on additional services at no extra cost. These include:

Trains from Hastings/Ore to Ashford International
High-speed services between Ashford International and London St Pancras
Southern route services from Uckfield for passengers travelling from Stonegate, Wadhurst, or Frant.

Improved Travel Options to Minimise Disruption

The planned improvements are part of an ongoing effort to address the challenges faced by the railway line, which dates back over 170 years. Despite the inconvenience caused by the closure, the upgrades will improve the reliability of the line for years to come.

In response to the disruption, rail operators have worked to ensure that replacement buses are available to minimize inconvenience. Passengers are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys, as services are likely to experience delays during the closure period. Rail operators are also providing clear travel information to assist passengers in planning ahead for their travel.
