Thailand Takes Bold Step Towards Sustainable Tourism with Green Route

Thailand launches its first SAF-powered low-cost airline route from Bangkok to Phu Quoc, marking a major step in sustainable tourism and green aviation.

Thailand opened a new low-cost airline route to Phu Quoc that connects to Bangkok starting November 6 2025. The new route has been designated a “green route” as it is the first low-cost airline route to be powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Its introduction helps the country reduce carbon emissions, under the Aviation 2050 strategy that aims to achieve net zero by that year.

A Collaborative Effort for a Cleaner Future

The Green Route initiative is the result of a partnership between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Thai Vietjet, and PTT Oil and Retail Business (PTT OR). This collaboration seeks to promote cleaner air travel while supporting Thailand’s goal of sustainable tourism. The use of SAF, a renewable energy source made from materials like used cooking oil and agricultural waste, will play a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions from the aviation sector. The route marks a new chapter in ASEAN’s journey toward low-carbon, eco-friendly travel solutions.

The Role of SAF in Aviation’s Green Future

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is at the heart of this revolutionary move. Unlike traditional jet fuel, SAF can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80%. Thai Vietjet, under its “Fly Green” program, has already incorporated SAF on commercial flights, making it the first low-cost airline in Thailand to do so. The Bangkok-Phu Quoc route is the second SAF-powered commercial route after the success of the Bangkok-Da Nang service in 2024. This step is part of a long-term plan that aims to power 5% of all Thai Vietjet flights with SAF by 2030.

The Environmental Impact of SAF

The incorporation of SAF on flights can significantly reduce carbon emissions. For instance, each SAF-powered flight cuts down approximately 250 kilograms of CO₂ emissions. Over the next six years, Thai Vietjet aims to reduce total carbon emissions by more than 153,000 tons. This commitment reflects the airline’s dedication to balancing business growth with environmental responsibility, ensuring that travel doesn’t come at the cost of the planet’s health.

Aviation’s Green Transition Boosted by Thai Vietjet’s Leadership

Thai Vietjet’s leadership in adopting SAF is part of a broader effort to decarbonize aviation in Southeast Asia. By using renewable feedstocks such as used cooking oil and agricultural residues, SAF supports a circular economy while reducing the aviation sector’s reliance on fossil fuels. Thailand’s strong bio-based resources and circular economy infrastructure make it a prime candidate for scaling SAF production, further advancing both national and regional carbon-reduction goals.

Boosting Thailand’s Sustainable Tourism

TAT has long been at the forefront of promoting sustainable tourism in Thailand, and the Green Route initiative exemplifies the authority’s commitment to eco-friendly travel. With a growing number of travelers becoming increasingly aware of their carbon footprint, initiatives like this help elevate Thailand’s reputation as a responsible and trusted global tourism destination. By aligning the aviation sector with sustainable tourism practices, Thailand is positioning itself as a leader in green travel.

Travel Tips for the Eco-Conscious Traveler

  • Fly Green: Consider taking the Green Route for a more sustainable travel experience. The Bangkok-Phu Quoc route is not only a convenient connection but also one that contributes to a cleaner planet.
  • Eco-Friendly Practices: In addition to flying with SAF-powered flights, travelers can reduce their carbon footprint by supporting eco-friendly accommodations and tour operators.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up to date with sustainable tourism initiatives like the Thailand Tourism Awards and the Sustainable Tourism Acceleration Rating (STAR), which encourage responsible travel across the country.
  • Support Local: When traveling to Phu Quoc, explore the local sustainable practices in place, from waste management to energy-efficient hotels and businesses.

The Future of Aviation and Tourism in Thailand

The Green Route initiative starts an unprecedented long-term journey towards fostering sustainable tourism and significantly lowering the carbon emissions of the aviation industry. With the ongoing technological advancements of the aviation industry, travelers and tourists alike will appreciate more and more ‘eco-friendly’ options. Thailand, which has carbon-neutral goals set for 2050, works closely with airlines and energy and tourism companies, positioning itself as a global leader.

In the next few years, the “Fly Green” initiative will grow, and more airlines could follow the Thai Vietjet path of using SAF on scheduled commercial flights. Thailand will unquestionably remain a primary destination for sustainable tourism with the Thai government’s relentless advancement of green tourism policies and Thai Vietjet’s focus on commercially available sustainable aviation fuel.
