Thailand and PADI Unveil New Era of Responsible Dive Tourism Focused on Wellness, Adventure, and Marine Conservation

Thailand has long been renowned for its stunning beaches and vibrant underwater ecosystems, but now, the country is taking its reputation as a world-class scuba diving destination to the next level. Through a new, strategic partnership with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), Thailand is positioning itself as a leading player in the global diving scene, linking the thrills of adventure with wellness, responsibility, and marine conservation. This collaboration is being launched under the global “Healing is the New Luxury” campaign, which emphasizes restorative travel experiences that are good for both the traveler and the planet.

A Long-Standing Legacy of Scuba Excellence

For nearly five decades, Thailand has shaped the world of scuba diving, issuing over 2.5 million PADI certifications in the past 25 years alone. In 2025, Thailand was ranked as the second-largest country globally for PADI certifications, cementing its role as a global leader in dive tourism. The country is also home to nine PADI Eco Centers, all accredited through the United Nations’ Reef-World Foundation, reinforcing its commitment to marine conservation and sustainability.

Thailand’s dive operators, instructors, and conservation efforts are integral to the country’s high standing in the international dive community. It is no surprise that the kingdom also helped launch the PADI Global Shark & Ray Conservation Course and the Global Census, which engages divers worldwide in efforts to protect marine life. Most recently, three Adaptive Service Facilities in Thailand were accredited to make scuba diving accessible to individuals of all abilities, further solidifying the nation’s inclusivity and commitment to responsible dive tourism.

A New Era of Wellness and Purpose-Driven Travel

The partnership with PADI brings a fresh focus on purpose-driven tourism, where scuba diving is not just a sport or leisure activity but a meaningful experience that fosters personal wellness while contributing to global marine conservation efforts. Under this partnership, Thailand is positioning its dive offerings as pathways to restoration and well-being. Travelers are encouraged to dive not only for the excitement and adventure but also for the deeper, restorative effects that spending time underwater can have on the mind and body.

By aligning adventure with wellness, the collaboration aims to appeal to long-haul, high-value markets seeking experiences that connect them to nature and foster personal growth. Moreover, the benefits of this partnership extend beyond the divers themselves, as it actively contributes to the preservation of marine ecosystems and coastal communities. This connection between diving and conservation is set to resonate deeply with travelers increasingly seeking sustainability-focused experiences.

Global Content and Media Initiative

To bring this partnership to life, a global content and media initiative will spotlight Thailand’s dive tourism through immersive storytelling. High-profile filmmakers and photographers such as Pierson Ogelsby, Thai photographer and PADI AmbassaDiver Pier Nirandara, and other renowned PADI AmbassaDivers will explore Thailand’s most iconic dive destinations, including Ko Tao, an established hub for diver training and ocean advocacy. These creatives will collaborate with local dive operators like Black Turtle Diving to capture the underwater beauty of the region while showcasing Thailand’s long-standing dedication to marine protection.

As part of the initiative, TAT and PADI will host international journalists on a once-in-a-lifetime experience, where they will explore the country’s latest purpose-driven diving programs, including a three-day initiative led by Fast Manta Krabi. This program invites participants to dive into marine conservation efforts, including coral reef restoration, marine debris removal, and shark and ray research.

Wellness at the Core of Thailand’s Tourism Strategy

The media campaign will not only highlight diving but also link these experiences to Thailand’s broader wellness tourism agenda. Curated stays at luxury resorts in Krabi, such as the Varana Krabi Hotel, The Ritz-Carlton Phulay Bay, and Banyan Tree Krabi, will offer travelers opportunities to deepen their connection with nature and enhance their well-being. These resorts are advancing water-based wellness practices, incorporating cultural connections, and emphasizing community-driven initiatives that align with Thailand’s responsible tourism goals.

Through these initiatives, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable dive tourism while supporting long-term economic growth and environmental preservation. The partnership with PADI further exemplifies Thailand’s commitment to providing meaningful travel experiences that align with the country’s broader tourism strategy, ensuring that future generations can continue to explore and protect the nation’s incredible marine biodiversity.

In essence, Thailand is positioning itself as not only a top destination for adventure seekers but also a leader in wellness and conservation tourism. By offering experiences that combine the thrill of scuba diving with the tranquility of marine conservation, Thailand is redefining what it means to travel responsibly—an experience that truly heals both the body and the environment.
