South Carolina is taking over New York City with a near $1.5m tourism campaign that showcases key attractions including Charleston, Myrtle Beach and more. As part of its 3-day ‘SC in the City’ campaign (25-27 September), Times Square and Grand Central Terminal became buzzing hubs of promotion giving the state 16.2 million impressions and an 84% increase in tourism website traffic. The campaign featured Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach giving visitors a taste of the beautiful beaches, historic sites, food and culture the state has to offer with eye-catching digital billboards and interactive screens. New hotel accommodation in North Charleston as well as historic displays on Folly Beach means there’s even more reasons for families, leisure and long stay visitors to visit South Carolina.

Manhattan Becomes a Showcase for South Carolina Holidays

The state’s ambitious SC in the City promotion brought a taste of South Carolina to Manhattan between 25 and 27 September. Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall became a lively destination showcase featuring food, entertainment and regional traditions. Seven digital billboards in Times Square displayed tourism advertisements highlighting the state’s attractions. The event introduced New York audiences to South Carolina’s holiday possibilities, from scenic coastlines and historic neighbourhoods to cultural discoveries and family-friendly experiences.

Massive Digital Reach Highlights Growing Destination Awareness

The campaign delivered considerable visibility through outdoor advertising, digital platforms and direct public participation. Preliminary results showed more than 20,000 consumer interactions alongside 16.2 million combined impressions. Social media advertising contributed over two million impressions, while earned media exposure generated approximately 1.4 million. Website traffic rose by 84% during the promotional activity. Although these figures reflect strong audience engagement, they do not establish how many additional trips or hotel bookings resulted from the initiative.

Five Leading Destinations Capture the Tourism Spotlight

Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Hilton Head Island and Myrtle Beach formed the central attraction of the promotional campaign. These destinations represented the variety of experiences available across South Carolina, from urban sightseeing to peaceful coastal escapes. Travellers were introduced to historic architecture, local cuisine, outdoor recreation and seaside entertainment. By highlighting five different locations, the campaign encouraged visitors to look beyond a single destination and discover the wider tourism opportunities available throughout the state.

Historic Cities and Coastal Retreats Reveal Different Travel Experiences

Charleston stood out for its historic streets, waterfront setting and culinary attractions, while Columbia offered museums, cultural venues and city experiences. Greenville represented the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the Upstate region. Hilton Head Island showcased its beaches, golf courses and relaxing coastal atmosphere. Myrtle Beach highlighted seaside accommodation, entertainment and family attractions. Together, the destinations demonstrated how South Carolina combines heritage, nature, leisure and hospitality within a diverse holiday landscape.

Local Flavours and Creative Traditions Bring Tourism to Life

The New York event offered visitors an opportunity to experience South Carolina’s cultural character beyond conventional advertising. Regional food collaborations introduced distinctive culinary traditions, while live artisan demonstrations presented elements of the state’s craftsmanship. Interactive installations encouraged attendees to explore different attractions and holiday activities. These experiences helped create a direct connection between potential visitors and the destination. The campaign used cultural engagement to make South Carolina’s tourism message more memorable.

Strong Air Connections Support Travel From New York

New York remains an important source market for South Carolina, particularly among travellers seeking accessible leisure destinations outside the Northeast. The metropolitan area represents the state’s largest visitor market beyond the southeastern United States. At the time reported, approximately 75 weekly nonstop flights connected the New York region with South Carolina airports. These services support travel to the state’s coastal resorts, historic cities and recreational areas, strengthening the accessibility of its tourism offerings.

Major Marketing Investment Expands South Carolina’s Visibility

The nearly $1.5 million promotional initiative received support from additional tourism marketing resources allocated by South Carolina’s General Assembly. It ranked among the state’s most substantial destination advertising efforts in more than a decade. By combining high-profile billboards with cultural activities and digital engagement, the campaign reached audiences across several channels. Its long-term commercial impact will depend on whether increased destination awareness translates into visitor arrivals, accommodation demand and tourism spending.

North Charleston Prepares to Welcome a New Extended-Stay Hotel

South Carolina’s accommodation sector is expanding with a new Echo Suites by Wyndham property in North Charleston. The five-storey hotel, featuring 122 rooms, was scheduled to open in mid-November, although its exact opening date had not been announced. Situated at 9351 Blue House Road, the development is located near Trident Medical Center and Charleston Southern University. Developed by Holladay Properties, the hotel will provide another accommodation option for travellers requiring longer stays.

Modern Guest Facilities Target Longer and More Comfortable Visits

The planned Echo Suites property is designed to provide practical facilities for guests staying beyond a conventional short holiday. Rooms will feature kitchenettes, full-sized refrigerators and additional storage areas. A fitness centre and guest laundry facilities will also be available. These features support the needs of business travellers, visiting families, university-related guests and people staying near local medical facilities. The development adds another type of accommodation to North Charleston’s hospitality market.

Hotel Development Adds Momentum to North Charleston’s Hospitality Sector

The new property will join existing extended-stay accommodation providers, including Home2 Suites and StayAPT Suites. The development site was acquired in 2024 for approximately $1.4 million by HP ES-VI North Charleston SC LLC, which shares an address with Holladay Properties. The developer also has Echo Suites projects in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. North Charleston’s accommodation inventory has grown further through recent Drury Plaza and Element by Marriott openings near Tanger Outlets and Centre Pointe.

Folly Beach Unveils an Exhibition on Its Changing Coastline

Folly Beach is broadening its visitor experiences through an exhibition dedicated to the island’s coastal history. The Folly Beach Historical Society opened Shifting Sands: The History of Folly Beach’s Ever-Changing Shoreline on 5 November. The exhibition examines how natural processes have altered the coastline over time and explains the city’s beach management efforts. Scheduled to remain on display for approximately one year, it offers an educational experience for visitors interested in coastal landscapes and local history.

Historic Porgy House Gains Fresh Cultural Recognition

The island’s heritage attractions have also expanded through an exhibition exploring the Porgy House and its historical significance. The Porgy House: A Cottage on an Island in a Culture is scheduled to remain available until the end of the year. A historical marker has been installed outside the property on West Ashley Avenue. Supported by the city’s tourism funding, the initiative provides visitors with more information about the cottage and its place in Folly Beach’s cultural story.

Folly Beach Plans New Heritage Discoveries for 2027

Additional historical projects are being prepared to introduce visitors to different chapters of Folly Beach’s past. Exhibitions planned for 2027 will explore the island’s piers and its connections to the American Civil War and the Second World War. A downloadable historical tour and virtual displays on surfing and Cole Island are also under development. The historical society is collecting memories of Hurricane Hugo in 1989 to preserve local experiences of the significant coastal storm.

Tourism Promotion and New Attractions Shape South Carolina’s Visitor Future

South Carolina’s recent developments bring together destination advertising, hotel investment and cultural heritage initiatives. The New York campaign has increased public exposure for major destinations, while North Charleston’s planned hotel will expand accommodation choices for longer visits. Folly Beach’s exhibitions are creating opportunities for travellers to discover the island’s history alongside its beaches. These combined efforts are strengthening South Carolina’s tourism offering and supporting its ambition to attract visitors with varied interests.
