Slow-moving storm system takes aim at Florida as days of heavy rain threaten Southeast

FLORIDA - A surge of wet weather is headed for the Southeast U.S. this week, with days of storms that could add significant rain by the end of the month.

The second half of the week will bring wet, nasty weather as repeated rounds of heavy rain are expected to begin Thursday and continue through the weekend.

Persistent rounds of widespread rain and gusty winds will impact Florida’s coast.

SLOW-MOVING SYSTEM COULD BRING DAYS OF HEAVY RAIN AND FLOODING TO THE BAHAMAS AND FLORIDA

By Thursday, an upper-level low-pressure system will form near Cuba and bring tropical moisture to the region, producing about 2 to 3 inches of rain across South Florida.

The surge in moisture and severe storms will persist into next week, drenching popular cities such as Miami, where a Level 2 out of 4 flash flood threat is in place through the weekend.

The flood threat will likely raise water levels, which isn’t good news since mid to late October is the peak of king tide season and will likely worsen coastal flooding across the region.

The main threat to South Florida from the unsettling weather pattern in the Southwest Pacific is prolonged severe storms, not an imminent tropical storm threat.

WHAT IS A KING TIDE OR PERIGEAN SPRING TIDE?

Despite warm ocean waters to fuel the dangerous weather, tropical development is not guaranteed.

With heavy rain and flooding as the main threat, prediction markets at Kalshi break down the chances of how much rain Miami will receive by the end of the month as prolonged storms lash the region through early next week.

Experts at Kalshi predict an 81% chance that Miami will receive more than 4 inches of rainfall, and a 60% chance of more than 5 inches by the end of the month.

As storms continue to develop and intensify over the next couple of days, the odds may change.
