Germany Welcomes More Indian Visitors as Concerts and Oktoberfest Boost Travel Interest

France expands UPI access as Germany sees more Indian arrivals and Britain promotes music and regional experiences.

Germany is witnessing an increasing number of Indian tourists due to increased interest in concert tours and Oktoberfest, as recent numbers indicate. Tourist arrivals from India have gone up in 2025 and kept on increasing throughout the first seven months of 2026. At the same time, flight bookings heading to Munich during Oktoberfest have gone up, providing the city with a perfect boost at the right time. All of this indicates why Germany wishes to attract Indians via their culture, events, and convenient vacation planning. Bookings are not visits, while Oktoberfest can’t be the only factor contributing to such an increase.

What makes France’s UPI expansion notable?

France has built the clearest European example of UPI acceptance for Indian shoppers. The payment system first appeared at the Eiffel Tower in 2024. It then reached Galeries Lafayette’s flagship Paris store in July 2024 and La Vallée Village Concierge in 2025. In June 2026, acceptance expanded to Galeries Lafayette Nice Massena.

That move gives the story a regional dimension. Nice is a major Riviera destination, so the expansion takes the payment offer beyond Paris. It could make shopping easier for visitors who use UPI at participating locations.

There is already a measure of recorded use. Around 9,000 successful transactions worth nearly €930,000 had been recorded since UPI launched in France, through June 2026. These are transactions, not a count of individual tourists. The figure demonstrates that the system has been used, while leaving open how widely merchants and visitors will adopt it.

Does UPI work across Europe?

No single countrywide assumption should be made. UPI’s availability differs by country and by payment type.

France supports person-to-merchant payments. This is the type a traveller may use to pay a participating business. Greece’s UPI service, by contrast, handles person-to-person remittances. Eligible customers can transfer money between Greece and India, but that does not establish that tourists can scan UPI codes at Greek shops, hotels or restaurants.

This distinction matters because “UPI is live” can mean different things. A traveller may be able to send money through a remittance service without being able to pay for lunch or a museum ticket.

In France, UPI is also not universal. Acceptance is limited to selected sites, and further expansion across visitor services remains an objective. Travellers should check whether a particular merchant accepts UPI before relying on it.

How is Germany turning interest into travel?

Germany’s Indian tourism growth is supported by several factors. Arrivals from India increased by 9.8% in 2025, reaching 306,000. From January to July 2026, arrivals reached 184,000, up 9.1% year on year. Indian travellers generated €1.3 billion in trip revenue in 2025, including travel costs.

Events are part of the picture. Flight bookings from India to Munich between mid-September and October 2026 were 60% higher than in the corresponding period of 2025. Oktoberfest provides a high-profile reason to visit Munich at that time of year. However, bookings do not equal completed journeys, and the figure relates to Munich rather than all of Germany.

Germany is also promoting travel beyond one city. Indian visitors show interest in historical sights, culture and shopping. Around 36% take multi-destination tours, while 33% go on city breaks. This suggests that regional itineraries can form part of the country’s appeal.

Can music make Europe’s regional destinations more attractive?

London shows the economic scale of music tourism. The city attracted 9.1 million music tourists in 2025 and generated £3.4 billion in related spending. The total included 8.1 million domestic visitors and one million overseas visitors. It should not be presented as spending by international tourists alone, or as evidence of a specific Indian contribution.

Britain’s opportunity reaches beyond the capital. In October 2026, the Liverpool City Region Destination Partnership joined VisitBritain and other northern destinations in a showcase aimed at Indian travel buyers. The programme promoted music, culture, sport, film locations and other experiences. Its goal was to encourage Indian visitors to travel beyond London and spend more time in northern England.

This strategy connects live entertainment with a wider holiday. A visitor may attend a concert, then add a waterfront walk, a cultural attraction or another northern destination. That is a potential itinerary, not proof that a particular show has generated extra hotel stays.

Which European events could shape late 2026 travel?

Several official listings point to a busy cultural season. In Berlin, Udit Narayan and Aditya Narayan’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan concert is scheduled for 13 November 2026. The event listing confirms the date and venue, but does not state how many visitors will travel from India.

Vienna’s Winter Market at Riesenradplatz is scheduled to run from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. The programme includes live music spanning gospel, soul and pop, alongside food and family activities.

France also has a strong winter calendar. Strasbourg’s Christmas Market is scheduled from 27 November to 24 December 2026. Lyon’s Fête des Lumières runs from 5 to 8 December. Together, these events give travellers reasons to consider destinations beyond Paris during the winter season.

None of these event listings confirms UPI acceptance. Visitors should check ticket and merchant payment options separately.

What should Indian visitors know about visas and border checks?

The European Union adopted a more favourable multiple-entry visa regime for eligible Indian nationals who reside and apply in India. A traveller who has obtained and lawfully used two short-stay visas within the previous three years may qualify for a two-year multiple-entry visa. A five-year visa may follow, subject to passport validity and the rules. This is an eligibility framework, not a guarantee that every application will be approved.

The EU’s Entry/Exit System became fully operational at participating external borders on 10 April 2026. The system records travel-document details, facial images and fingerprints for eligible short-stay visitors from outside the EU. Indian nationals who require a short-stay visa do not need an ETIAS travel authorisation. Their border information is handled through the Entry/Exit System.

These procedures matter when visitors plan an event trip. Travellers need to account for visa eligibility, travel dates and border requirements alongside flights, hotels and payment methods.

What does the evidence say about Europe’s wider Indian tourism prospects?

In order to expand use of UPI beyond Paris, France is doing its part as Europe attempts to attract Indians with their concerts and wintertime activities. However, a closer look at the evidence indicates that the situation is not quite what it appears to be. According to Germany, Indian arrivals to their nation are increasing, but according to France, their most recent visitor numbers are dated 2024 and those of Britain 2026 will still be predictions. In addition, hotel overnight stays in Switzerland have increased each year but are still lower than pre-2019 figures. Consequently, the lure of Europe cannot be considered as unstoppable.
