Seorabeol Pungnyu in Gyeongju to Showcase Korean Traditional Arts, Blending Music, Dance, and Modern Interpretations for Global Audiences

In celebration of the 2025 APEC Summit, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of South Korea, in partnership with the Korean Traditional Performing Arts Foundation (KoTPA), is set to host an extraordinary cultural event called Seorabeol Pungnyu. Started from September 12 to will run through October 29, 2025, this series of performances will unfold across Gyeongju, one of Korea’s most historically significant and culturally rich cities. With venues spanning Gyochon Traditional Village, Yukbuchon, and the Cheomseongdae Observatory, the event promises to offer a dynamic and immersive experience for both domestic and international visitors.

The festival is intended to bring the vibrant traditions of Korea’s cultural heritage to life while celebrating the spirit of the APEC Summit. Featuring a total of 37 performances by over 700 traditional musicians, dancers, and performers from 31 ensembles, this event marks a significant moment in the tourism industry, inviting travelers to experience Korea’s history and artistry in a new light.

Bridging the Ancient and Modern with Seorabeol Pungnyu

At its core, Seorabeol Pungnyu draws inspiration from Eumseongseo, Korea’s first royal music institute, and strives to merge the ancient with the contemporary. The Gyochon Traditional Village will host the first performances, which will occur every Friday and Saturday at 5 PM from September 12–27, and daily at 5 PM during the Chuseok holiday from October 7–12. This venue will feature a fusion of traditional and contemporary performances, where leading Yeongnam region gugak musicians will present gugak instruments, vocals, and dances, along with chamber ensemble-based contemporary gugak compositions. These performances will be open to all visitors, providing an engaging introduction to the region’s traditional arts.

Starting from October 20 to 29, performances will also take place at Yukbuchon, with shows scheduled daily at 7 PM. This section of the event will showcase performances from the National Youth Traditional Performing Arts Troupe, the National Youth Dance Troupe, and various local groups. Through energetic and passionate performances, these young artists will bring traditional Korean art forms to life, providing audiences with a rare opportunity to experience Korea’s cultural heritage in a dynamic, youthful setting. Grand Gugak Performances

From October 22 to October 29, an outdoor stage will be set up for nightly performances at 7 PM. This will feature some of Korea’s leading national-level public institutions, including the National Gugak Center, Gyeonggi Sinawi Orchestra, the Gugak Broadcasting Foundation, and the Jeonbuk State Gugak Center. These large-scale gugak performances will showcase the grandeur of traditional Korean music, bringing together elements of Korean culture that are both mesmerizing and celebratory. Presented by the Performing Arts Group of National Jeongdong Theater, this performance reimagines the classic Simcheong folktale through modern visual techniques, such as LED visuals. The production goes beyond the traditional narrative of filial piety, providing a contemporary rethinking of the inner world of Simcheong. This innovative use of modern technology combined with traditional storytelling will offer a new layer of cultural experience, attracting a broader audience, including younger generations, and emphasizing the evolution of Korean performing arts in the modern era.
