Poland Sets the Stage for High-Speed Rail Domination with New Siemens-Newag Partnership
Poland is on track to dominate the European high-speed rail sector, with the strategic partnership between Siemens Mobility and Newag setting the foundation for a cutting-edge rail network.
Poland is on track to dominate the European high-speed rail sector, with the strategic partnership between Siemens Mobility and Newag setting the foundation for a cutting-edge rail network. The recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two companies promises to revolutionize Poland’s rail infrastructure, combining Siemens’ global leadership in high-speed rail technology and Newag’s manufacturing prowess. This collaboration is poised to enhance Poland’s capabilities in developing high-speed trains, alongside robust maintenance systems, positioning the country at the forefront of Europe’s rail transformation. As Poland plans its ambitious expansion of high-speed rail services, this partnership plays a pivotal role in solidifying its dominance in the sector, making it a key player in Europe’s rail future.
Siemens Mobility and Newag have taken a major step towards revolutionizing Poland’s rail infrastructure by signing a groundbreaking cooperation agreement. Through this Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two companies are set to enhance their collective capabilities in producing and maintaining high-speed trains, ushering in a new era for Poland’s rail system. This partnership focuses on combining expertise in engineering and manufacturing to support the growing demand for fast, efficient, and sustainable transport solutions in the country.
Strengthening Collaborative Expertise in High-Speed Rail
The MoU between Siemens Mobility and Newag lays the groundwork for deepened collaboration, with an emphasis on knowledge exchange and technical assessments. Both companies will leverage their strengths—Siemens’ extensive experience in high-speed rail and Newag’s leading role as a Polish rolling stock manufacturer—to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the rail sector. Together, they aim to develop high-speed trains that not only meet the evolving needs of Polish passengers but also support long-term operational efficiency through cutting-edge maintenance strategies.
This partnership goes beyond just the production of high-speed trains. By focusing on advanced maintenance concepts, the MoU also addresses the critical aspect of ensuring long-term reliability. With increasing demands for sustainable travel solutions, the partners aim to create a robust framework that keeps the trains operational and efficient for years to come.
Poland’s Vision for High-Speed Rail Expansion
Poland is making tremendous strides in its vision to become a leader in high-speed rail travel in Europe. The first high-speed line, connecting Warsaw and Łódź, will be a central part of the nation’s broader infrastructure overhaul, with the addition of the Central Communication Port (CPK) acting as a key transport hub. The CPK project is designed to integrate air and rail travel, ensuring a smooth and fast connection for passengers traveling through the new airport.
In a bold move to advance the country’s rail capabilities, CPK revealed plans in March 2025 to procure high-speed trains with speeds up to 300 km/h, alongside two additional fleets capable of reaching 200 km/h. These trains are set to be leased to third-party operators, marking a significant leap in Poland’s high-speed rail ambitions. The procurement is a clear indication that the country is serious about competing with the most advanced rail systems in Europe.
Further strengthening the rail network, the national long-distance operator PKP Intercity launched a tender in December 2025 for 20 high-speed trains capable of reaching up to 250 km/h. The contract includes a long-term maintenance agreement, alongside the construction of a specialized maintenance facility, ensuring that the trains will stay in top condition for years. Additionally, the contract offers an option for 35 more trains, demonstrating the growing demand for high-speed transport within Poland’s borders.
Newag’s Continued Growth in Regional Rail Solutions
While Siemens Mobility and Newag focus on high-speed rail, Newag is also expanding its footprint in regional rail projects. Recently, Newag secured a contract to deliver Impuls 45WE Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) to Koleje Małopolskie, a key regional operator in the Małopolska Voivodeship. This order, valued at Zlotys 382.6 million ($106.8 million), is part of a broader framework agreement which could see the delivery of up to 25 EMUs.
The funding for this project comes from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, and Environment 2021–2027 programme, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to advancing regional transport across Europe. The new EMUs will improve connectivity across the Małopolska region, offering a more sustainable and efficient transport option for passengers. With this latest order, Newag has proven its ability to meet the increasing demand for modern rail solutions, with 19 trains set to be delivered over the next three years.
Poland is set to dominate Europe’s high-speed rail sector with the strategic Siemens-Newag partnership, combining global expertise and local manufacturing to drive the country’s rail infrastructure to new heights.
The collaboration between Siemens Mobility and Newag is a vital step in the modernization of Poland’s rail infrastructure. With projects like the CPK high-speed line and PKP Intercity’s train procurement driving the need for advanced rolling stock, this partnership will be instrumental in shaping Poland’s future in high-speed rail. Siemens and Newag are not only helping to meet the growing demands of Polish passengers but are also positioning Poland to lead the way in Europe’s high-speed rail market.
In parallel, Newag’s ongoing success in regional rail projects, such as the Impuls 45WE EMUs for Koleje Małopolskie, highlights the company’s growing influence in the rail industry. With its strategic focus on both high-speed and regional rail solutions, Poland’s rail system is poised for a period of significant transformation, driven by cutting-edge technology, innovation, and a commitment to sustainability.
