Italy’s Umbria Comes Alive as Frantoi Aperti 2026 Unlocks Ancient Villages, Olive Oil Treasures and Stunning Autumn Adventures

Umbria’s Frantoi Aperti 2026 brings olive oil tastings, Franciscan trails, village tours, cycling and cultural experiences to Italy until 15 November

Italy’s Umbria region is celebrating the 29th edition of Frantoi Aperti 2026 from 17 October to 15 November, transforming its olive-growing countryside, medieval villages and working olive mills into destinations for food, heritage and outdoor tourism. Organised by the Associazione Strada dell’Olio E.V.O. Dop Umbria, the five-weekend programme brings together local producers, restaurants, cultural organisations and rural communities to celebrate the autumn olive harvest. This year’s edition introduces new trail-running experiences, expands cycling and motorcycling activities, and connects olive oil tastings with Franciscan heritage during the 800th anniversary year of the death of St Francis of Assisi.

Umbria’s Olive Harvest Becomes a Major Attraction for Autumn Travellers

Frantoi Aperti 2026 places Umbria’s extra virgin olive oil tradition at the centre of a regional tourism experience. Throughout the festival, participating olive mills welcome visitors to discover how freshly harvested olives become olio nuovo, the newly pressed oil associated with the autumn season.

The programme extends across destinations including Assisi, Spoleto, Trevi, Bevagna, Montefalco, Spello, Amelia and Campello sul Clitunno. Visitors can combine mill tours and tastings with village markets, traditional food, countryside excursions and cultural attractions. Rather than concentrating tourism in one location, the initiative encourages travel between smaller communities. This creates opportunities for rural hospitality providers, restaurants, guides and agricultural producers to participate in the visitor economy.

Franciscan Heritage Takes Centre Stage with Special Olive Oil Tourism Routes

Religious heritage forms a distinctive part of this year’s programme through the Evo&Art Experience. The guided itineraries combine visits to Franciscan landmarks with regional olive oil tastings, creating a connection between Umbria’s spiritual history and agricultural traditions. The 1 November itinerary explored the Trasimeno Hills, departing from Magione and incorporating countryside visits and lunch inside an operating olive mill. Selected experiences also feature Franciscan friars, strengthening the historical interpretation of the routes.

The final tour on 15 November explores the Colli Amerini and Orvietani, connecting areas around Terni, Amelia and Narni with the Sacro Speco and the historic Via Amerina corridor. For cultural and religious tourism, these routes provide a way to discover lesser-visited parts of Umbria beyond its best-known pilgrimage destinations.

Castello di Pissignano Alto Prepares for a Major Olive Oil and Village Tourism Celebration

One of the remaining highlights takes place on Sunday, 8 November, at Castello di Pissignano Alto in Campello sul Clitunno. The medieval village will host an extensive programme of olive oil markets, traditional food, exhibitions, guided walks and cultural activities. A free shuttle between Piazza di Pissignano and the hilltop castle is scheduled from 08:00 to 20:00. Visitors can also explore participating mills, including Frantoio Marfuga, Frantoio Eredi Gradassi and Frantoio Carletti.

The programme includes several visitor experiences:

  • 09:00–12:00: Guided trekking through olive groves towards a Franciscan hermitage.
  • 09:30–12:30: A family-friendly woodland walk featuring fairy tales and storytelling for children aged five to twelve.
  • 10:00–17:00: Market showcasing newly pressed olive oil.
  • 14:30: Guided tour of the medieval castle.
  • 14:30–16:30: Cooking experience exploring olive oil in regional cuisine.
  • 15:00–16:00: Chocolate and Moraiolo olive oil tasting experience.

Visitors can also explore the UNESCO-listed Tempietto sul Clitunno, which forms part of the serial World Heritage property associated with the Lombards in Italy. The published programme lists a €3 admission charge, with free admission for children. Some activities require advance registration, and schedules may change.

Cycling, Trail Running and Motorbike Adventures Bring New Energy to Olive Oil Tourism

Outdoor experiences expand the festival beyond food tasting and traditional sightseeing. The newly introduced Frantoi Aperti Trail Run took place around Campello sul Clitunno on 18 October, connecting sporting activities with the olive-growing landscape. The same local programme included a 9.8-kilometre competitive running event and a non-competitive option.

La Grande Pedalata, now in its fourth edition, explores the Assisi–Spoleto Olive Belt by e-bike. The route highlights terraced hillsides, rural settlements and the cycling landscape connecting Spoleto and Campello sul Clitunno.

Motorcycling enthusiasts have three scheduled Moto Giro experiences:

DateRouteTourism experience
18 OctoberAssisi–Spoleto hillsHistoric villages and olive mill visits
1 NovemberTrasimeno HillsLake-area countryside and olive oil tastings
15 NovemberAmerini and Orvietani hillsScenic roads, working mills and regional food

The motorbike programme incorporates visits to operational mills, bruschetta tastings and local produce. These routes provide additional ways to explore Umbria’s rural tourism network during the olive harvest.

Ancient Olive Trees, Contemporary Art and Local Cuisine Create Distinctive Cultural Experiences

Frantoi Aperti 2026 also brings art, music and gastronomy into Umbria’s agricultural landscape. The #Chiaveumbra contemporary art initiative, curated by Palazzo Lucarini Contemporary, introduces installations that connect artistic expression with nature. The Suoni dagli Ulivi Secolari concert series places live performances beside ancient olive trees, including locations associated with Sant’Emiliano in Trevi, Macciano in Giano dell’Umbria, Amelia and Dolce Agogia.

Food tourism receives additional attention through the #EVOOAmbassador network. Participating chefs and restaurants prepare menus showcasing regional olive varieties, including Moraiolo, San Felice and Dolce Agogia, alongside seasonal countryside and lake specialities. These experiences help visitors understand how olive oil connects Umbria’s agriculture, culinary traditions and cultural identity.

What Happens Next as Umbria’s Olive Oil Festival Approaches Its Final Weekend?

With the festival concluding on 15 November, attention now turns to the final Franciscan heritage itinerary, the Amerini and Orvietani motorbike route and remaining olive mill experiences. The regional programme also connects with wider autumn food celebrations. Assisi’s UNTO 2026, which runs from 22 October to 28 November, offers additional opportunities to explore olive oil production, local cuisine and rural heritage beyond the closing date of Frantoi Aperti.

For travel operators and destination businesses, the festival illustrates how agricultural heritage can be developed into experiences spanning gastronomy, outdoor recreation, religious tourism and cultural discovery. By connecting working olive mills with medieval villages and historic landscapes, Umbria continues to promote a form of tourism that encourages visitors to explore smaller communities during the autumn season.
