PKP Intercity Chooses Alstom as Preferred Bidder for New Double-Deck EMUs
PKP Intercity selects Alstom to supply 42 double-deck EMUs in a deal worth $1.1 billion, with plans for service across major Polish routes.
PKP Intercity, Poland’s primary intercity train operator, has selected Alstom as the preferred bidder to supply 42 double-deck electric multiple units (EMUs) for the Polish railway network. The deal, valued at 4.1 billion Zlotys (approximately $1.1 billion USD), also includes a maintenance contract worth 2.8 billion Zlotys, ensuring the trains are serviced for the next 30 years.
In the bidding process, Alstom was chosen over Stadler, which had submitted a competing offer. Stadler proposed a supply cost of 4 billion Zlotys, but its maintenance contract was more expensive, coming in at 3.3 billion Zlotys. PKP Intercity highlighted that the Alstom bid was nearly 400 million Zlotys cheaper while also scoring higher in other areas such as energy efficiency and delivery timelines.
The new fleet will be manufactured at Alstom’s Chorzów factory in Poland, marking a significant investment in local production. PKP Intercity expects the trains to enter service within three and a half years and plans to deploy them on major routes radiating from Warsaw, including connections to Gdańsk, Łódź, Olsztyn, Wrocław, Kraków, Białystok, and Terespol.
Features and Specifications of the New Double-Deck Trains
The new double-deck EMUs will offer significant improvements in passenger comfort and accessibility. Each train will have the capacity to carry over 500 passengers, with features designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience. The air-conditioned trains will be equipped with reclining seats, individual tables, armrests, footrests, and adjustable lighting for added comfort. Passengers will also have access to Wi-Fi, power sockets, and USB ports throughout the train.
The trains will feature both first and second-class compartments, as well as additional amenities such as a quiet zone, a children’s area, and vending machines with a dining space. There will also be dedicated areas for bicycles and large luggage with secure storage. Importantly, the trains will be fully adapted for passengers with reduced mobility, ensuring inclusivity for all travelers.
Advanced Safety and Technology Integration
In addition to passenger comfort, the new fleet will be equipped with modern safety and technology features. The trains will be fitted with European Train Control System (ETCS) Levels 1 and 2, which will enhance the safety and efficiency of operations. They will also include an onboard diagnostic system, GPS for real-time tracking, and both internal and external CCTV for enhanced security.
The trains are designed to operate not only within Poland but also in the neighboring Czech Republic, making them versatile for cross-border services.
A Boost to Local Manufacturing and Employment
The production of these new double-deck EMUs at Alstom’s Chorzów factory will not only enhance Poland’s rail infrastructure but also provide a significant boost to the local economy. By manufacturing the trains domestically, the project will support Polish manufacturing industries and create new jobs in the region. This collaboration between PKP Intercity and Alstom underscores Poland’s commitment to bolstering its local economy through investments in high-tech, sustainable projects. The expansion of the manufacturing facilities and the skilled workforce required to build and maintain the trains will contribute to the long-term economic stability of the area. Additionally, the expertise gained through this venture will strengthen Poland’s position in the global railway market, attracting further opportunities for industrial development.
Looking Ahead: A Modernized Polish Rail Network
PKP Intercity’s decision to invest in these advanced double-deck trains reflects Poland’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its railway infrastructure. The new fleet will provide more capacity and better services for passengers, contributing to the development of a faster and more sustainable public transport system. By improving the efficiency and comfort of train services, PKP Intercity is also making strides in encouraging more people to choose rail over car travel, which will help reduce congestion and lower emissions.
The addition of these trains will complement PKP Intercity’s existing fleet, providing a more reliable and eco-friendly alternative for travelers across Poland. This project is part of a broader initiative to improve public transportation and infrastructure in Poland, further positioning the country as a leader in modern European rail transport.
