Kani Ka Pila Grille: A Legacy of Hawaiian Music

Since its opening in 2009, Kani Ka Pila Grille has become a beloved fixture in Waikīkī, attracting both locals and visitors who wish to experience authentic Hawaiian music in a welcoming, community-focused venue. The venue’s name, “kanikapila,” was given by legendary slack-key guitarist Cyril Pahinui, who performed weekly at KKPG and helped establish it as a gathering place for Hawaiian music lovers.

Over the years, Kani Ka Pila Grille has hosted some of the most respected names in Hawaiian music, including Ledward Kaapana, Ho’okena, Sean Nā’auao, Nathan Aweau and many others. The venue has welcomed approximately 2.6 million guests and has become a cornerstone for preserving and promoting Hawaii’s rich musical heritage.

Central to KKPG’s mission is its commitment to nurturing the next generation of Hawaiian musicians. Through initiatives like the annual Kani Ka Pila Grille Talent Search Competition, the venue has provided aspiring artists with a platform to showcase their talents. The 2026 competition will accept entries starting in June, with a live competition scheduled for August 22, 2026. Past winners of the Talent Search have gone on to achieve great success, earning prestigious Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and carving out lasting careers in the music industry.
