The journey culminated in Mutare at 5:10 PM, where it was welcomed by dignitaries including Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Barbara Rwodzi, Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development Joshua Sacco, and newly-appointed NRZ board chairman Dr Misheck Sibanda.

The launch of the leisure train coincides with the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo, scheduled from September 10 to 12 in Mutare. The expo has already attracted international attention, with buyers from countries like India, France, Germany, and the UK expressing interest in the Eastern Highlands’ offerings.

Local businesses are optimistic about the influx of tourists. Leonard Bwanya, General Manager of Musangano Lodge, noted that international buyers were previously unaware of the Eastern Highlands’ attractions. He emphasized the importance of the Grand Reef Airport’s operationalization, which facilitates easier access for international visitors.

Government’s Commitment to Tourism Development

Minister Rwodzi addressed critics of the leisure train, asserting that the government is committed to building a world-class rail service. She highlighted plans to upgrade the train with leather seats and other amenities, aiming to “shame detractors” and demonstrate the country’s development progress.

Deputy Minister Sacco emphasized that the train service is more than just transportation; it’s an invitation to experience Zimbabwe’s landscapes and culture. He also welcomed the return of Air Zimbabwe flights to Mutare, enhancing connectivity to the region.
