Mizoram has emerged as the fastest-growing tourist destination in Northeast India, attracting a record number of visitors in 2025. This surge in tourism can be credited to several key factors, including the state’s growing reputation for eco-tourism, its rich cultural heritage, and its natural beauty, which continue to captivate both domestic and international travelers. In 2025, Mizoram saw a 29.5% increase in tourist arrivals, reaching an all-time high in footfall. The state’s tourism sector has been bolstered by a variety of initiatives, such as hosting the first-ever Mizoram Travel Fest, significant infrastructure investments, and national recognition for its eco-tourism efforts. These developments, combined with a focus on sustainable practices, have positioned Mizoram at the forefront of the region’s tourism growth, making it a sought-after destination for those seeking an authentic and eco-friendly travel experience.

Mizoram, a serene and scenic state in Northeast India, has emerged as the fastest-growing tourist destination in the region, attracting both domestic and international visitors. With its growing appeal and rich cultural heritage, Mizoram is swiftly establishing itself as a top-tier eco-tourism hub in India.

Between April and December 2025, the state recorded a significant total of 6,79,607 tourist arrivals. Of these, 6,70,001 were domestic visitors, while 9,606 were international tourists. This marks a substantial 29.5% increase compared to the previous year’s total, indicating a remarkable surge in the number of people exploring the state. The growth in visitor numbers highlights Mizoram’s increasing prominence as a desirable travel destination, with its untouched landscapes and cultural diversity playing a key role.

December 2025 witnessed the highest-ever tourist footfall in the state, with a total of 1,33,520 visitors, representing a striking 122.11% increase from December 2024. This spike in numbers showcases the region’s growing recognition and the positive reception of its tourism initiatives, which are making it a preferred destination for travelers seeking both tranquility and adventure.

Mizoram’s tourism department has successfully drawn attention on national and international platforms. The state was honored with the “Emerging Eco and Nature Retreat Award” at the 10th edition of the International Tourism Conclave and Travel Awards held in New Delhi in July 2025. This award recognizes Mizoram’s efforts to promote eco-friendly tourism, which aligns with the state’s commitment to preserving its pristine environment while welcoming visitors from around the world.

The state’s tourism development was further amplified with the first-ever Mizoram Travel Fest, held in Aizawl from October 8 to 10, 2025. The festival featured a variety of events, including a cooking competition, B2B meetings, and an investors’ summit, fostering a platform for local businesses and tourism stakeholders. A key highlight was the signing of an MoU between the Tourism Department and the Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Department, aiming to foster eco-tourism initiatives and ensure the sustainable growth of tourism in Mizoram.

Recognizing the importance of enhancing infrastructure, the Union Ministry of Tourism has sanctioned Rs 5.47 crores under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme for upgrading facilities at Vangchhia, a significant heritage site in Champhai District. Known for its vast necropolis and 171 ancient carved stones at Kawtchhuah Ropui, Vangchhia attracts history enthusiasts and archaeology lovers. This project will improve accessibility and provide amenities that will enhance the overall tourist experience.

In addition to this, the state has received a Rs 34.50 crore grant for the Vantawng View Aerial Ropeway Project. This project aims to make the Vantawng Waterfall, one of Mizoram’s most popular tourist sites, more accessible. The aerial ropeway will provide visitors with a unique bird’s-eye view of the surrounding lush green forests, further elevating the region’s tourist appeal. Additionally, a Rs 9.97 crore allocation has been made for the construction of a Convention Centre in Thingsulthliah, which will serve as a modern venue for conferences, events, and exhibitions, adding to the state’s growing infrastructure for tourism.

Mizoram’s focus on preserving its cultural heritage is evident in several projects aimed at both conservation and community development. The “Our Heritage, Our Treasure” project at Vangchhia, funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC), aims to preserve cultural traditions while fostering skill development and creating income-generating opportunities for local residents. This initiative is a testament to the state’s vision of sustainable tourism that benefits both the environment and the local communities.

The state is also celebrating its vibrant traditions through the Live Museum at Zokhua, Falkawn, which offers visitors an immersive experience into the traditional Mizo way of life. Through live demonstrations, the museum showcases various Mizo customs, crafts, and practices, providing an authentic cultural experience. Given its growing popularity, the museum’s program has been extended until March 2026, allowing more tourists to engage with Mizoram’s cultural heritage.

Mizoram has become the fastest-growing tourist destination in Northeast India in 2025, driven by its eco-tourism initiatives, cultural richness, and significant rise in both domestic and international visitors, marking a 29.5% increase in tourist arrivals.

With these transformative steps, Mizoram is rapidly emerging as a major player in India’s eco-tourism sector. The state’s scenic beauty, cultural richness, and commitment to sustainability make it an ideal destination for travelers seeking a peaceful yet enriching experience. As infrastructure development continues and more eco-tourism projects come to fruition, Mizoram is poised to attract an increasing number of tourists in the coming years, solidifying its place as one of the premier travel destinations in Northeast India.
