Mizoram, one of India’s most serene and picturesque states, has experienced a remarkable surge in tourism, with an impressive 29.50% increase in visitor numbers during the 2025 period. Riding on this wave of growth, Mizoram has now secured its place as the fastest-growing state in terms of tourist footfall among the eight Northeastern states. Officials are optimistic that this trend will continue, as the state becomes an increasingly popular destination for both domestic and international travelers.

Exceptional Growth in Tourist Arrivals

The state recorded a total of 6,79,607 visitors between April and December 2025, with 6,70,001 of those being domestic tourists and 9,606 coming from abroad. This figure reflects a significant jump compared to the previous year’s total arrivals, highlighting the state’s growing prominence as a must-visit destination in the Northeast. Mizoram has notably outperformed its counterparts in the region, with December 2025 marking the highest monthly tourist footfall ever recorded in the state at 1,33,520 visitors—a 122.11% increase compared to the same month in 2024.

Mizoram’s tourism growth can be attributed to its diverse offerings that combine eco-tourism, cultural experiences, and unique natural beauty. With its lush green landscapes, tranquil villages, and rich heritage, the state has become a magnet for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and those interested in exploring India’s northeastern frontier.

Mizoram’s efforts to bolster tourism were formally recognized when it received the prestigious “Emerging Eco and Nature Retreat Award” at the 10th edition of the International Tourism Conclave and Travel Awards in New Delhi in July 2025. This recognition solidifies Mizoram’s growing reputation as a prime destination for eco-tourism and sustainable travel.

The state’s government has also been actively working to develop infrastructure and promote local heritage to further enhance the tourism experience. A prime example of this is the Mizoram Travel Fest, which took place from October 8 to 10, 2025, in Aizawl. The event included a range of activities, including a cooking competition, a B2B meet, and an investors’ summit, designed to bring together stakeholders in tourism development. During the event, the Tourism Department signed an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Department, aimed at promoting eco-tourism and enhancing collaboration in preserving the state’s natural resources.

Major Infrastructure Projects to Boost Tourism

The growing tourism demand in Mizoram has led to substantial investments aimed at improving basic infrastructure and enhancing the visitor experience. Notably, the Tourism Ministry has sanctioned Rs 5.47 crores under the PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme for the development of amenities at Vangchhia, a site of immense historical and cultural importance. Vangchhia, known as the largest necropolis in the world, is a significant archaeological site that attracts visitors interested in history and culture.

Additionally, the state is set to benefit from major projects, including a Rs 34.50 crore grant for the Vantawng View Aerial Ropeway Project. This initiative, which is part of the SASCI (Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment) scheme, aims to provide a unique aerial view of the majestic Vantawng Falls, one of Mizoram’s most breathtaking natural landmarks.

The construction of a Convention Centre in Thingsulthliah, with a financial sanction of Rs 9.97 crore from the Union Ministry of Tourism, further demonstrates Mizoram’s commitment to expanding its tourism infrastructure. This venue will host international and national conferences, further establishing Mizoram as a key player in the region’s tourism industry.

Community Engagement and Cultural Preservation

Mizoram is also focused on preserving its rich cultural heritage while promoting sustainable development. The project “Our Heritage, Our Treasure” at Vangchhia village, supported by the North Eastern Council (NEC), is a prime example of this approach. The initiative aims to preserve Mizoram’s cultural heritage and provide skill development opportunities for local communities. This project, which focuses on income generation through cultural preservation, benefits both the state’s tourism industry and its local residents by creating a more inclusive and sustainable tourism model.

Moreover, the state has been hosting a Live Museum at Zokhua, Falkawn, where visitors can experience demonstrations of traditional Mizo life. The popularity of this exhibit has led to its extension until March 2026, allowing more visitors to engage with and learn about the state’s unique culture and customs.
