THE TAKEAWAY

As Americans ease into fall, many are in the path of chilly temperatures in the North, while unseasonably high temperatures refuse to fade on the West Coast.

Frost is likely in the Eastern U.S., while other states in the West continue to see unseasonable warmth for October, showcasing the mere contrast in weather from one side of the country to the next.

After a gloomy weekend across the East Coast, a substantial shift will take hold as a persistent Canadian high-pressure system pushes a cool air mass deep into the region.

The main driver of the chilly weather is a strong cold front sweeping through the East, channeling cool, dry air and creating crisp fall conditions across the Great Lakes and Northeast, as well as the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

WHAT IS A COLD FRONT?

Daytime temperatures across the Northeast, New England and Mid-Atlantic will hover in the 50s and low 60s, while portions of the Southeast will settle in the 60s and lower 70s.

The calm, high-pressure skies will help nighttime temperatures drop significantly, into the 30s for portions of New England, the Adirondacks, Central Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes, the FOX Forecast Center said.

This will help fuel the long-awaited morning frost, especially across higher-elevation locations.

As a result, frost advisories and freeze warnings are active for portions of Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Frost advisories include popular locations such as Johnstown and State College, Pennsylvania, through Tuesday morning.

Over the next five days, people across the East will see a shift in temperature departures.

Locations such as Syracuse, New York, and Burlington, Vermont, will experience an average morning temperature of 46 degrees this week.

Trends like this will mark the official shift to consistently normal fall conditions, as nighttime cold temperatures return and help fuel early-season freezes.

Shifting gears to the West Coast — hot weather will plague California and provide an unseasonable shift from the East Coast's fall weather, with temperatures as high as 100 degrees expected in several locations.

Extreme heat warnings are now in effect throughout portions of Southern California, including populated areas such as Los Angeles and San Diego until Thursday evening.

Sweltering conditions have persisted since last Friday, when 15 new record-high temperatures were set, according to the FOX Forecast Center.

Los Angeles recorded back-to-back temperatures of over 100 degrees for the first time in October.

In light of the unseasonably high temperatures, heat advisories are in place for parts of Northern California, including San Francisco and Sacramento, down along the central coast and the San Joaquin Valley through Friday.

Temperatures will soar 10 to 15 degrees above average for millions of people from California to Montana starting today.

Little to no relief is in sight from the sweltering weather, as the warmth spreads into parts of the Great Plains, where daytime temperatures will dip into the mid-to-upper 80s from Salt Lake City to Nashville.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

With the stretch of warm weather expected to continue through the week, people on the West Coast have a rare last chance to enjoy the unseasonable warmth before a minor cool down on Friday and into Saturday.
