Mexico Faces Unrest Amid Cartel Violence: What Travelers Need to Know Right Now
Travelers heading to Mexico face uncertainty after cartel violence disrupted popular destinations. Here's what to know about safety and spring break plans.
Recent cartel violence in Mexico has sparked widespread concern, especially as spring break approaches. The violence was set off by the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” the head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. His death on February 23 led to retaliatory attacks that spread quickly, affecting several parts of the country, including popular tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, and Playa del Carmen.
In response, the U.S. government issued shelter-in-place warnings and flight cancellations, which prompted many travelers to reconsider their trips to Mexico. However, despite these unsettling events, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum reassured the public, stating that the country was “calm” and that peace was maintained. But as images of unrest flooded the media, travelers are left wondering if it’s safe to go ahead with their spring break plans.
What Should You Do if You Have Upcoming Travel to Mexico?
With the current situation in mind, Kent Webber, a senior manager at Global Rescue, warned that traveling to Mexico is not risk-free under the present conditions. He advised travelers to stay vigilant, monitor the situation closely, and avoid areas where violence has not yet stabilized.
It was noted that Mexico, being a vast country three times the size of Texas, experiences varying levels of security risks across different regions. Popular tourist areas such as Mexico City, Quintana Roo, and Baja California Sur are still under a Level 2 advisory from the U.S. Department of State, which advises travelers to “exercise increased caution.” These areas have largely remained unaffected by cartel-related violence, making them safer options for those with travel plans.
As of late February, it was reported that Quintana Roo, which includes popular destinations like Cancun and Playa del Carmen, had not experienced any major disruptions. Bernardo Cueto, Quintana Roo’s Secretary of Tourism, assured that tourism activities continued to operate normally, including airport operations, ground transportation services, and hotels.
Mexico’s Spring Break Destinations Remain Open for Business
Despite the ongoing violence, many popular tourist destinations in Mexico remain open and welcoming to travelers. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and other hotspots are still business as usual. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico has confirmed that there have been no widespread incidents targeting tourists in these areas, so there is no immediate reason to cancel trips to these places.
Puerto Vallarta, another major destination, did experience significant flight disruptions due to the violence, but officials report that the situation is improving. The local airport has resumed 90 percent of its regular operations, with full service expected to return soon.
In Quintana Roo, the local tourism infrastructure was reported to be functioning smoothly. Cueto stated that tourism in the Mexican Caribbean continues without major disruptions, assuring travelers that they should feel confident proceeding with their plans to visit these areas.
Which Areas Should Be Avoided?
While many areas remain safe for travelers, there are some regions in Mexico currently experiencing heightened security risks. Six states are currently under a Level 4 advisory, which urges U.S. travelers to avoid all non-essential travel. These states—Colima, Guerrero, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, and Michoacán—have seen an increase in cartel violence. Michoacán, for example, is home to the famous Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site that draws thousands of visitors each year.
In response to the violence, some tour companies, such as Natural Habitat Adventures, have canceled trips to Michoacán, especially during the busy butterfly migration season. However, some operators, including Mauricio Miramontes from the Adventure Travel Trade Association, have pointed out that travel in certain areas of these states can still be safe if proper precautions are taken.
For those already in Mexico, Hanson suggested staying in a safe location, like a hotel, and avoiding unnecessary travel. He mentioned that the most dangerous part is movement, referring to the risk of encountering cartel activity while traveling between locations. He advised that if individuals are in a safe spot, they should stay there.
How to Stay Safe During Your Mexico Vacation
For those still planning to visit Mexico, staying informed and up-to-date is key. The U.S. Department of State provides daily updates on security situations in Mexico, including flight statuses and safety measures. Keeping in touch with your hotel or local tour operator for real-time information is also recommended.
Mexico remains one of the top tourist destinations in the world, and many areas are still safe and open for business. Puerto Vallarta and Cancun are just a couple of examples where tourists are not experiencing any ongoing violence. The country’s tourism infrastructure is resilient, and the hospitality sector continues to welcome travelers.
Tourism professionals are advising people to exercise caution and stay informed, especially when traveling to more remote or high-risk areas. While the recent unrest may have caused some temporary disruptions, it’s crucial to recognize that most of Mexico remains peaceful and open for exploration.
Looking Ahead: Mexico’s Tourism Industry Remains Resilient
Even with recent setbacks, Mexico’s tourism industry is proving to be resilient. Popular destinations like Quintana Roo, Puerto Vallarta, and Playa del Carmen remain unaffected by cartel violence. In these areas, travel plans continue without major disruptions, and tourists are still enjoying their vacations.
If you’re planning to visit Mexico soon, it’s important to stay informed and be prepared for any changes in the security situation. If you’re traveling to areas with higher security risks, such as Michoacán or Guerrero, it’s best to keep an eye on official travel advisories and potentially adjust your travel plans accordingly.
Mexico is still an incredible destination to visit, and while the recent violence has impacted certain regions, the country continues to welcome millions of visitors each year. By staying vigilant and monitoring the situation, travelers can enjoy all that Mexico has to offer without undue concern.
