With new studies completed and major proposals awaiting approval, the groundwork is being laid for another significant expansion of the railway network.

Two major initiatives have recently reached an important milestone. Surveys for a proposed 46-kilometre line between Baramulla and Uri, as well as for the doubling of the 118-kilometre Banihal–Baramulla route, have been completed. These assessments form the basis of Detailed Project Reports, which have now been readied and moved into the approval process. Once endorsed by the territorial administration and national-level agencies, these projects will open the door to expanded capacity and more efficient train operations across northern Jammu and Kashmir.

The USBRL project itself has already changed how people and goods move across the region. Stretching from Udhampur to Baramulla, the corridor crosses steep gorges, unstable slopes, and high-altitude valleys—areas where traditional road links often struggle against snow, landslides, and frequent closures. By connecting districts such as Reasi, Ramban, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, and Budgam, the railway has become a dependable alternative to road travel, offering consistent access even in periods of adverse weather.

A number of engineering breakthroughs have defined the project’s development. The steel arch bridge towering 359 metres above the Chenab River stands as the highest railway bridge anywhere in the world, representing both a technical triumph and a symbol of regional connectivity. Accompanying it is the cable-stayed bridge over Anji Khad—the first of its kind on the national railway network—demonstrating the innovative construction methods required to navigate the Himalayan geology. These major structures, along with more than 300 smaller bridges, extensive tunnelling, and over 215 kilometres of approach roads, mark the USBRL as one of the most complex rail projects undertaken in the country.

The infrastructure already in operation has generated far-reaching benefits. High-speed services now link Katra with Srinagar, offering residents and visitors a swift, reliable, and modern travel option. Local trains on the Qazigund–Srinagar–Baramulla stretch have eased daily commuting burdens and enabled smoother access to schools, workplaces, and commercial hubs.

Agriculture—the lifeline of many communities—has also felt the positive impact. Apple growers, who previously relied on unpredictable road transport to ship produce to major markets, now benefit from faster and more consistent rail timelines. The reduced travel duration preserves fruit quality, enhances earnings, and minimizes losses caused by delays. Freight transport supporting construction and manufacturing sectors has also become more streamlined, with railways handling bulk materials more efficiently than road transport can.

The proposed network expansion is expected to reinforce these gains. The new Baramulla–Uri line will open improved access to remote areas and support greater economic activity near the border region. Meanwhile, doubling the Banihal–Baramulla track will increase the overall capacity of the rail corridor, enabling more trains, better scheduling, and smoother operations. In a region where harsh weather frequently disrupts road movement, these enhancements will ensure stable mobility throughout the year.

Tourism, a sector with immense potential in Jammu and Kashmir, is expected to see new opportunities as connectivity deepens. Easier access to the valley’s scenic landscapes, heritage towns, and adventure destinations is likely to attract more domestic and international travellers. The expansion will also improve last-mile linkages, encouraging longer stays and broader exploration across the region.

Beyond transportation, the rail network serves as a driver of long-term regional development. It strengthens supply chains, supports local businesses, and opens pathways for investment. Better mobility encourages new enterprises, facilitates educational access, and improves social infrastructure.
