As the festive season approaches, Irish Rail has unveiled its new late-night services for the 2025 holiday period, ensuring that commuters, holidaymakers, and partygoers can travel with ease throughout the Christmas and New Year season. Until December 21, 2025, the extra late-night services will be offered on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. This will provide much-needed relief for people who work late or are returning from celebratory events.
Expanded Late-Night Services for Holiday Travelers
In response to growing demand, Irish Rail is extending its operational hours during the holiday season to accommodate the bustling festive atmosphere in Dublin and surrounding regions. The newly added late-night services will operate from Pearse Station, Connolly Station, and other key locations, making it easier for passengers to travel across several routes. The services include:
- Howth Line: A 12:30 am and 1:30 am departure from Pearse Station, serving all stations to Howth.
- Greystones Line: A 12:35 am and 1:35 am service from Connolly Station, covering all stations to Greystones.
- Dundalk Line: A 12:40 am and 1:40 am service from Pearse Station, covering Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk.
- Maynooth Line: A 12:27 am and 2:10 am service from Pearse Station to Maynooth.
- Drumcondra and Kildare Lines: Departing at 11:55 pm and 1:58 am from Pearse Station, travelling to Drumcondra and serving all stations from ParkWest to Kildare.
These extended services are part of Irish Rail’s ongoing efforts to improve customer experience during the high-demand holiday season. Passengers are advised to check for updates in their travel apps to ensure the accurate travel times, as certain routes may experience minor changes.
Special Christmas and New Year’s Schedule
Irish Rail has also released its full timetable for the Christmas and New Year period, which includes various alterations to accommodate the holidays. Key dates and services to note include:
Christmas Eve: December 24, 2025
On Christmas Eve, InterCity services will be running with cancellations and alterations on some routes. The final services will depart between 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm. DART and commuter lines will operate a Saturday schedule, with last services scheduled between 7:25 pm and 9:00 pm. The Phoenix Park Tunnel Commuter service will be available until 7:45 pm, offering a reduced service. The Cork commuter line will operate a Saturday service, with last services between 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
Christmas Day: December 25, 2025
No train services will be operating on Christmas Day, including all routes serviced by Irish Rail. This applies to both DART and InterCity lines.
St Stephen’s Day: December 26, 2025
Similarly, there will be no train services on St Stephen’s Day. Passengers should plan ahead and consider alternate transportation for this day.
Boxing Day and Post-Christmas Travel: December 27–30, 2025
Normal Saturday services will resume on December 27, 2025, although there will be cancellations and alterations on certain InterCity routes. Similarly, Sunday services will operate on December 28, with adjustments to some InterCity services. During this period, Irish Rail will be running a revised and reduced InterCity service alongside regular Saturday services on DART, commuter routes, and the Cork Commuter line. The Phoenix Park Tunnel will operate at a reduced level, and the Portlaoise Commuter route will also follow the Saturday schedule.
New Year’s Eve: December 31, 2025
New Year’s Eve marks another round of late-night services, ensuring revellers can enjoy Dublin’s city-wide celebrations and return home safely. The following extra late-night services will run:
- Howth Line: 1:30 am and 2:30 am from Pearse Station to Howth.
- Greystones Line: 1:35 am and 2:35 am from Connolly Station to Greystones.
- Dundalk Line: 1:40 am and 2:40 am from Pearse Station, serving Tara St, Connolly, and all stations from Howth Junction to Dundalk.
- Maynooth Line: 1:20 am and 3:05 am from Pearse Station to Maynooth.
- Drumcondra and Kildare Lines: 12:55 am and 2:58 am from Pearse Station, traveling to Drumcondra and all stations from ParkWest to Kildare.
Irish Rail has emphasized that fares will remain at normal rates, with passengers able to use their Leap Cards for the best value. For frequent travelers, weekly, monthly, and annual season tickets will remain valid on these late-night services at no additional charge.
Enhanced Safety and Security
To ensure the safety of passengers during the extended hours, Irish Rail will deploy security personnel aboard the late-night trains. This initiative aims to provide peace of mind for travelers, particularly those returning late at night.
New Year’s Day: January 1, 2026
While New Year’s Day will see some reduction in InterCity services, DART and commuter routes will operate on a Sunday schedule. The Cork Commuter line and Portlaoise Commuter line will follow a Saturday timetable, and the Phoenix Park Tunnel service will be unavailable.
