Monster 20-foot waves eye Hawaii as Invest 93C churns in the Pacific, threatens late-week impacts
We're tracking three areas of potential tropical development between Mexico and Hawaii over the open waters, with one in particular worth watching for the Aloha State.
A tropical traffic jam continues across the Pacific as the active hurricane season ramps up. The FOX Forecast Center is tracking three areas of interest designated between Mexico and Hawaii over the open waters, with one in particular worth watching for the Aloha State.
Over the next seven days, these three disturbances range from low to high chances of development. The FOX Forecast Center is most concerned with the high-probability system in the Central Pacific dubbed Invest 93C as it approaches Hawaii later this week.
HAWAII COULD BE IN PATH OF TROPICAL THREAT AS EL NIÑO BOOSTS EASTERN PACIFIC ACTIVITY
The other two disturbances currently pose no threat to land. However, the one closest to Invest 93C has a better chance at developing with odds in the medium category at this time.
For now, though, all eyes remain on Invest 93C as it tracks toward Hawaii and is likely to become a tropical depression by mid-week.
Right now, the disturbance is in the beginning stages of consolidating, which means it is very difficult to pick out exactly where the center is.
"Determining where the center is is extremely important for the future track of the disturbance," the FOX Forecast Center said, as it ultimately shapes the outcome.
If the center stays on the eastern side of thunderstorm activity, this would eventually allow the storm to track closer to the Hawaiian Islands, perhaps even making a near landfall.
Meanwhile, if it stays on the western side of thunderstorm activity, this would likely keep the center from ever making landfall on Hawaii's Big Island.
When we compare Invest 93C to previous tropical threats to the Aloha State, it's important to note that this storm is coming together south of Hawaii over much warmer waters.
As the disturbance is likely to move from the southeast, it will keep the core safely over the warmer waters that can sustain a stronger storm.
LATEST FROM FOX WEATHER HURRICANE SPECIALIST BRYAN NORCROSS
"Whether Invest 93C becomes a strong storm remains to be seen," the FOX Forecast Center emphasized. "It is a very large area of disturbed weather right now, which means it will take longer to form."
Regardless of direct impacts to Hawaii, monster waves of 16 to 20 feet could batter the islands later this week as the system approaches.
Additionally, the FOX Forecast Center notes that Hawaii is facing a legitimate tropical threat for the first time since Hurricane Hone in 2024, which brushed just south of the islands as a hurricane.
Should Invest 93C strengthen into a tropical storm, it is slated to take the name Lala.
So far this season, the strengthening El Niño has helped keep the basin active, producing seven named storms, including Hurricane Genevieve, which reached Category 5 intensity.
Stay ahead of the storm with FOX Weather for continuous hurricane season updates.
