This project is designed to modernise the maintenance systems for the advanced rolling stock, including LHB and Vande Bharat trains. Key components of the plan include the construction of new washing lines, stabling lines, pit lines, a wheel lathe line, an engine escape line, and a sick line shed. Additionally, state-of-the-art maintenance machinery and overhead equipment will be installed to optimise operational efficiency. This upgrade will boost maintenance capacity by six rakes per day, which will allow for increased train services and improved service quality.

Boosting Maintenance Capacity at Lalgarh Depot

In Rajasthan’s Bikaner region, Phase II of the Augmentation of Coaching Maintenance Facilities at Lalgarh has been approved for Rs. 139.6820 crore. This ambitious project will turn Lalgarh into a fully equipped maintenance depot, complete with a washing line, covered sheds, a sick line extension, service buildings, and modern lifting systems. The addition of automatic washing plants, retractable overhead equipment, and EOT (Electric Overhead Travelling) cranes will further streamline maintenance processes. These upgrades are designed to enhance the reliability of Vande Bharat and LHB services, reduce turnaround times, and improve the quality of passenger services across the region.

Kerala’s Rail Corridor Expansion to Alleviate Congestion

In Kerala, Indian Railways has given the go-ahead for the doubling of the 21.10-kilometre Turavur-Mararikulam section on the busy Ernakulam-Alappuzha-Kayankulam corridor, with an investment of Rs. 450.59 crore. This corridor, which handles significant passenger and freight traffic, including port-related cargo, will benefit from expanded capacity to meet growing demand. The project will enable the addition of nine more passenger trains per day in each direction and significantly increase annual freight capacity by 2.88 million tonnes. It is also expected to reduce travel times by 17 to 19 minutes for freight trains and 12 to 15 minutes for passenger trains. This expansion will improve connectivity with Cochin Port, facilitating economic growth in the region and improving overall transport efficiency.

New Bypass Line to Reduce Congestion in West Bengal

A Rs. 107.10 crore project to construct a 4.75 km Kalipahari Bypass Line in West Bengal has been approved under the Eastern Railway zone. This new bypass is designed to eliminate the need for engine reversals at Asansol Yard, which currently causes congestion and delays for trains traveling between South Eastern and Eastern Railways. By providing direct connectivity, the bypass will reduce detention times for freight trains by up to 90 minutes and passenger trains by about 30 minutes. This will increase the line’s capacity, improve punctuality, and reduce operational delays, ultimately benefiting both passenger and freight services in the region.
