Indian Railways is set to revolutionize travel in Jammu and Kashmir by reducing the journey time between Jammu and Srinagar to under five hours with the Vande Bharat Express. The high-speed train service will be extended to Jammu Tawi station and upgraded with 20 modern coaches, cutting travel time significantly compared to the eight-hour road journey along the often disrupted Jammu-Srinagar highway. Running on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link, the service will provide a reliable, all-weather alternative for passengers, with stops at key towns including Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, making rail travel faster, safer, and more convenient across the region.
Currently, the Vande Bharat Express runs between Katra and Srinagar, providing passengers with a modern, semi-high-speed travel option. With the planned extension to Jammu Tawi, the train will also see an expansion from eight to 20 coaches, allowing more travelers to enjoy the service comfortably. The move addresses a long-standing demand for faster, reliable rail connectivity across the region.
The launch from Jammu Tawi had initially been planned for March 1 but has been temporarily postponed due to operational considerations. A final date for commencement is expected to be announced soon. While the full redevelopment of Jammu Tawi station is still underway, the essential infrastructure needed for Vande Bharat services has already been completed, including track readiness, platform alignment, and signaling upgrades, ensuring the train can operate safely and efficiently.
Road travel in this mountainous region is frequently disrupted by landslides, heavy snowfall, and adverse weather conditions, making reliable transportation a major challenge. The Vande Bharat Express will provide a dependable, all-weather alternative. Operating at an average speed exceeding 55 kmph, it will significantly reduce travel time while maintaining comfort and safety for passengers.
Under the proposed timetable, the train will depart Jammu Tawi at 6:15 am, arriving in Srinagar at 11:10 am. The return journey will leave Srinagar at 2:00 pm, reaching Jammu Tawi by 6:50 pm. Key stops along the route will include Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, in addition to its terminal stations. The extension also opens the possibility of a direct service connecting New Delhi with Srinagar, further expanding travel options for tourists and residents.
The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), spanning 272 km, became fully operational on June 6, 2025, after decades of construction. The completion marked the end of a 42-year-long project aimed at linking Kashmir with the rest of the country by rail. The 111-km Katra-Banihal section presented unique engineering challenges due to steep terrain, seismic sensitivity, and extreme weather conditions.
Several engineering achievements make this route remarkable. The T-50 rail tunnel, extending 12.77 km, is India’s longest operational railway tunnel. The Chenab Bridge, at 359 metres above the riverbed, holds the record as the world’s highest railway arch bridge, while the Anji Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. Together, these structures demonstrate the scale and complexity of connecting the Himalayan region to the national rail network.
The idea of linking Jammu and Srinagar by rail is more than a century old, first conceived in 1898, with initial plans approved in 1905 for a narrow-gauge line through Reasi. Although early efforts never materialized fully, they laid the foundation for the modern railway system now in place. Over the years, sections of the line were opened in phases, ultimately leading to the completion of the full route in 2025.
The Vande Bharat Express, part of India’s initiative to modernize rail travel, combines speed with comfort and advanced safety features. The semi-high-speed train is designed to cater to both daily commuters and long-distance travelers, providing a reliable, time-saving alternative to road transport. By connecting Jammu Tawi and Srinagar directly, it also supports tourism in the region, making it easier for visitors to access destinations such as Katra and other scenic towns along the route.
Beyond convenience, the new service is expected to reduce road congestion and improve overall connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir. With predictable travel times and modern amenities, passengers can enjoy a smoother journey through the Himalayan foothills. The project also highlights broader efforts to strengthen transportation infrastructure in challenging terrains, enhancing economic, social, and cultural integration in the region.
Indian Railways will cut Jammu-Srinagar travel time to under five hours by extending the Vande Bharat Express to Jammu Tawi, offering a fast, reliable, and all-weather alternative to the often disrupted highway. The upgraded 20-coach train will stop at key towns including Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, making travel across the region quicker and more convenient.
Once the extended service is launched, the Vande Bharat Express will redefine travel between Jammu and Srinagar, offering speed, reliability, and comfort while linking key destinations in the region. The expansion represents a milestone in modern rail travel in India, ensuring that residents, tourists, and businesses benefit from a safe and efficient transportation option that operates year-round.
