IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG), a global leader in the hospitality industry, is excited to announce the upcoming expansion of the Regent brand in Japan, with the launch of its first resort location.

Set to open in 2028, the Regent Karuizawa will be a luxurious 58-key onsen retreat nestled in the historic town of Karuizawa. This new addition will offer a selection of elegantly appointed rooms and villas, setting a new standard for luxury in mountain resorts.

Designed by the acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the resort will be enveloped in verdant forests, natural hot springs, and sweeping views of Mount Asama. It will serve as an exclusive retreat, combining serene landscapes with the sophisticated, contemporary luxury that defines the Regent brand, providing an unparalleled escape for guests in search of tranquility.

Abhijay Sandilya, Managing Director, Japan & Micronesia, IHG Hotels & Resorts and CEO of IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan, said: “We are delighted to announce the addition of Regent Karuizawa, our first Regent resort destination in Japan, to our estate, marking another important milestone in the growth of the brand in the country and around the world.

“Karuizawa is a unique destination just a short distance from Tokyo, celebrated for its stunning natural surroundings and serene, rejuvenating atmosphere. Regent is the ideal brand for this location, allowing us to create an immersive experience that blends tranquility, adventure, and luxury, while delivering flawless services for guests. This resort will redefine luxury hospitality in the region.”

“Since 2019, inbound tourism to Karuizawa has increased by 30%, highlighting the growing appeal of the town to international visitors. Regent Karuizawa will help meet this demand by offering immersive, luxury experiences that celebrate the area’s authentic culture.”

“The property aligns perfectly with the upcoming Regent Kyoto, contributing to the expansion of IHG’s luxury and upper-luxury offerings, and showcasing the Regent brand’s attractiveness to property owners seeking exceptional locations in both urban and resort settings across Japan.”

Regent Karuizawa will offer a range of dining and bar options, including a specialty restaurant with panoramic valley views. Other amenities include versatile meeting spaces, a wellness center with a signature spa and onsen, and a fully equipped gym.

Karuizawa, one of Japan’s most historic and renowned mountain resort towns, is a year-round destination with diverse attractions for every season. Visitors can enjoy scenic waterfalls, lush forests, charming streets, ski resorts, world-class golf courses, luxury shopping, and exquisite dining. The town is favored by the Japanese Imperial Family and is a popular retreat for the country’s elite, located just an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen.

Regent Karuizawa will complement the already established Hotel Indigo Karuizawa, both situated in the Nagano Prefecture town, offering a diverse range of experiences for all types of travelers.

With 55 hotels across 10 brands and 17 properties in the pipeline, IHG’s presence in Japan continues to grow. Regent Karuizawa will mark the brand’s second entry into the country, following Regent Kyoto, which is set to open in early 2028.
