Hanoi Launches Innovative Cultural Train and Eco-Friendly Transport

Hanoi, Vietnam’s bustling capital, is taking innovative steps to transform its tourism scene. By merging sightseeing with modern public transport systems, including metro lines and buses, the city is shaping a new era for tourists. The initiative is designed to provide unique and accessible travel experiences, helping rejuvenate the tourism sector and introduce fresh, exciting products to visitors.

In the case of the very exciting new projects, there is the cultural train tour, which is named the Hanoi Five City Gates Train and was inaugurated in September of the year 2025. It is also part of the projects that will help the large scale initiative which is launching in phase five. The first of the five phases is set to work traditional. Along with that work, there are also sets of five phases which pay special attention to high level mastery of traffic systems.

A Unique Cultural Train Journey

The cultural train tour offers a distinctive journey for tourists. This train connects Hanoi to the Quan Ho (love duet) folk music region in Bac Ninh, a historically significant area known for its folk traditions. Starting its regular service on September 3, 2025, the train travels along the Thang Long–Kinh Bac route, highlighting the city’s unique cultural landscape.

With the steamer’s arrival of the new passengers, the customs of Vietnam will be honored through traditional performances like the ‘xam’ song and Vietnamese ‘cheo’ opera. Passengers can dine on noteworthy traditional of the city and soft green rice, and lotus tea served and ride the train with all the scenery coming to life. Each carriage has its own unique elements and reflects different periods of Hanoi’s history, ranging from the subsidy-era period and Long Bien Bridge, to the older of the housing collective. The Gonmei also displays cultural features like the folk paintings of Dong Ho.

The tickets for this cultural journey sold out rapidly after its first commercial trips, demonstrating a high demand for such unique and immersive travel experiences.

Hanoi Metro: Linking Tourists to Iconic Destinations

Earlier this year, another ambitious project was launched with the opening of Metro Line 2A, connecting key attractions in Hanoi. With its 13-kilometre stretch and 12 stations, Metro Line 2A is a significant addition to the city’s transport infrastructure. The line links major tourist hotspots like Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, and the National Cinema Center. It also offers tourists the chance to explore Van Phuc Silk Village and Van Quan Lake.

Besides standard metro services, there are also organized tours of the Metro Line 2A control centre which offers visitors a glimpse into the driving of the metro. An added attraction is the driving simulator, which allows passengers to feel the metro’s operator. This is a step forward in integrating modern means of transport with the rich history of Hanoi, thus providing an unbroken chain of tourism.

Electric Buses: A Sustainable Way to Explore Hanoi

Hanoi’s transformation isn’t limited to the addition of metro sets and trains. The city has also added and integrated the routes of electric buses which offer another means of green solutions to ease tourist travel to the city’s attractions. They connect the city centre to places such as Bat Trang Pottery Village and other places, enabling more to be seen and visited as opposed to other means of stupendous travel.

During the ongoing national exhibition celebrating Vietnam’s 80 years of independence, the city has been offering free electric bus rides, carrying a large number of tourists. This initiative not only enhances the tourism experience but also contributes to sustainable urban development.

A Vision for Sustainable Tourism Growth

According to Tran Trung Hieu, the Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism, these transport innovations are not just about providing convenient mobility. They represent an effort to ease traffic congestion while boosting tourism through a combination of eco-friendly solutions and cultural experiences. The integration of public transport with cultural tourism products opens new avenues for the city to diversify its tourism offerings, attracting more visitors while maintaining environmental sustainability.

Hanoi Metro’s Deputy General Director, Nguyen Van Ngoc, elaborated on the necessity of converting the transport infrastructure into cultural tourism products. He noted that these projects are a form of inventive urban resource reallocation, and, thus, integrative cultural and economic initiatives that elevate the tourism potential of Hanoi. This type of urban planning demonstrates Hanoi’s intention to update the city’s infrastructure while staying true to its history.

Sustaining the Appeal of Public Transport-Based Tourism

Despite the recognition these transport-based tourism products are receiving, tourism specialists still would like Hanoi to consider their long-term popularity. According to. the Chairman of the Hanoi UNESCO Travel Club, Truong Quoc Hung, more cultural and experiential activities should be developed so that every ride on the metro, train, or bus becomes an immersion into the cultural story of the City of Hanoi. He added that to further enhance the tourist experience, tour packages that include accommodation and sightseeing tours should be offered.

Nguyen Tien Dat, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi Tourism Association, echoed these thoughts, stressing the need for stronger partnerships with local businesses. These collaborations could expand tourism destinations, enhance culinary experiences, and improve shopping opportunities at key stops along the transport routes.

Looking Ahead: Sustainable, Green Tourism

Hanoi’s tourism strategy aims to develop the city into a green, modern urban environment. As stated by Dang Huong Giang, Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism, future plans include conducting more surveys and pilot programmes to further refine tourism products linked to public transport. The city’s tourism sector is set to continue evolving, focusing on sustainable development while integrating its modern infrastructure with the city’s deep cultural heritage.

As these innovative transport products gain popularity, Hanoi’s tourism sector is poised for a revitalizing transformation, attracting more international visitors and boosting the city’s global appeal as a sustainable destination.
