Ha Noi Launches Digital Heritage Tourism with QR Codes, Interactive Mapping, and Cultural Itineraries, Supported by French Cooperation for Future Growth
Ha Noi introduces digital heritage tourism with QR codes, interactive mapping, and cultural itineraries, supported by French cooperation to boost cultural education and tourism.
Digital showcasing of the tangible and intangible heritage of Ha Noi, Vietnam’s capital, has been launched as part of the FEF-R Patrimoine Project, co-funded by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. The project is supported by key institutions such as the French Institute in Vietnam (IFV), the University of Social Sciences and Humanities – Vietnam National University, Ha Noi (USSH-VNU), the French School of the Far East (EFEO), and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF).
It will focus on introducing and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Ha Noi through four pilot heritage tourism itineraries, an interactive mapping system, the H-Heritage application, and the innovative use of QR codes at various heritage sites across central Ha Noi.
Introducing Four Themed Heritage Tourism Itineraries
The project, designed to make heritage sites more accessible and engaging, has curated four thematic tourism itineraries based on traditional Vietnamese belief systems. Each itinerary is designed not only to highlight significant heritage sites but also to tell a cohesive cultural story about Ha Noi’s spiritual and historical landscape.
The four itineraries focus on:
- The Four Guardian Temples
- Mother Goddess Temples
- Craft Ancestor Communal Houses
- Ha Noi Pagodas
These itineraries are meant to offer visitors a deep dive into the spiritual structure of Ha Noi, linking past and present in a narrative that explores the city’s cultural memory. According to Professor Dr. Hoang Anh Tuan, Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ha Noi is a city built upon layers of cultural sediment, where every site holds stories, memories, and traditions. He emphasized that to make these values more accessible to both young people and international visitors, new modern approaches are essential—approaches that this project provides through its interactive and digital tools.
Digital Mapping and QR Code Systems Enhancing Visitor Engagement
One of the key innovations of the project is the use of QR codes at selected heritage sites. Visitors can scan the codes to access detailed, real-time information about each location, offering a much richer experience than traditional physical signage alone. The information will be available in multiple languages, ensuring that foreign visitors can enjoy the same level of immersion and education as domestic tourists.
In addition to the QR codes, an interactive mapping system and the H-Heritage mobile application will guide tourists through the four curated itineraries, helping them explore the city’s heritage sites in a personalized and flexible way. This approach leverages digital technology to bridge the gap between traditional culture and modern tourism expectations, offering intuitive, user-friendly tools for both self-guided and group tours.
A Major Step Toward Sustainable Tourism and Cultural Education
The initiative not only aims to boost tourism but also has a strong focus on education. The research and digital resources generated from this project will provide valuable materials for students, researchers, and educators. The development of these heritage tourism itineraries is also expected to support cultural education in schools and extracurricular programs, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of Ha Noi’s cultural heritage.
The research team selected 28 representative heritage sites from over 100 surveyed locations in Ha Noi, underscoring the depth of cultural richness the city holds. This wealth of information has been carefully compiled into academic research volumes, with ten articles addressing topics like heritage law, deities, temples, and heritage sites. The initiative also reissued two books on Ha Noi’s deities and temples, contributing to ongoing cultural dialogue within Vietnam and beyond.
Future Tourism Growth: A Digital Foundation for Ha Noi’s Cultural and Sustainable Tourism Development
The digital heritage tourism project sets the stage for future tourism growth in Ha Noi, with significant implications for both visitor numbers and local economic impact. As Ha Noi continues to develop as a key cultural hub in Southeast Asia, the implementation of digital mapping, QR code systems, and the H-Heritage application will enable more efficient and engaging tourism experiences. This transition from traditional, print-based tourism materials to interactive, mobile-friendly solutions enhances the visitor’s journey, making it easier to explore a city rich in history, culture, and tradition.
By incorporating interactive, tech-based tools, Ha Noi is positioning itself to attract a more tech-savvy tourist demographic—especially younger generations of travellers who expect immersive and self-directed experiences. The future of tourism in Ha Noi will likely see a rise in slow travel experiences, where visitors explore not just the iconic landmarks but also lesser-known destinations, with the aid of digitally enhanced storytelling. This will drive longer stays, greater visitor satisfaction, and a stronger connection to the city’s cultural fabric.
Affirming the Strategic Role of France-Vietnam Cultural Cooperation
Finally, this is an initiative demonstrating the strategic place occupied by cultural cooperation between France and Vietnam. A digital technology heritage conservation joint effort, showing how this international partnership can drive innovation in tourism development, especially for a country like Vietnam that can combine its cultural richness with modern tourism infrastructure to create more meaningful and sustainable travel experiences.
As the project unfolds, it will continue to contribute to Ha Noi’s emergent cultural and tourist agenda while participating in the wider development of Vietnam as a regional exemplar of smart, sustainable cultural tourism. In heritage tourism that is more accessible, more engaging, and increasingly digital, Ha Noi will create conditions for a model of tourism that focuses on responsible growth and sustainable tourist practices along with the long-term preservation of culture.
