Experiencing Bohol through its communities

Bohol is often characterized by its iconic landmarks: the undulating, emerald-green hills of the Chocolate Hills that stretch across the landscape like a natural masterpiece, the tranquil, melodious flow of the Loboc River winding peacefully through lush scenery, and the pristine, azure waters encircling Balicasag Island, teeming with vibrant marine life. However, beyond these well-known sights, a deeper story unfolds through the vibrant communities that inhabit these regions, each adding its own unique character and culture to the island’s rich tapestry.

This perspective is currently being examined through an active community-based tourism (CBT) immersion initiative. It is led by the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Philippines in collaboration with Aboitiz InfraCapital Airports, which operates Bohol-Panglao International Airport.

“At Aboitiz InfraCapital Airports, we see tourism not just as movement, but as connection—with infrastructure such as Bohol-Panglao International Airport opening pathways for communities to share their stories, culture, and pride, and shape more meaningful travel experiences,” said Aboitiz InfraCapital Vice President and Head of Airports Rafael M. Aboitiz, who led Aboitiz InfraCapital Airports’ active participation in TPB’s recent CBT.

The program, which brings together chefs, media, key opinion leaders, and tourism trade representatives, will travel across the province from April 21 to 24, 2026, to demonstrate how community-driven activities can be incorporated into existing travel routes.

For TPB Chief Operating Officer Maria Margarita Montemayor Nograles, initiatives like this aim to enhance understanding of destinations beyond just superficial experiences.

“Tourism is not only about destinations, but about relationships—between people and place, between culture and environment, and between what we show the world and what we choose to preserve. In Bohol, we see how this balance can be achieved, where tourism becomes both meaningful and mindful.”

Throughout this CBT segment, food serves as a key element, highlighting how local ingredients and culinary customs define Bohol as a destination. It provides insight into the province not only through its flavors but also through the systems, traditions, and livelihoods that support it.

Throughout the itinerary, travel extends beyond just viewing points and brief stops. It turns into a slower, more immersive experience, where each location presents sights to explore and stories to discover.

The Loboc River acts as a connector, linking visitors with the communities along its banks. What could be a fleeting stop becomes a more immersive experience, providing a glimpse into how daily life, local environment, and traditions intertwine in this region of Bohol.

Further inland, visits to Lasang Farm introduce a different rhythm. The activities are driven by planting, harvesting, and preparation cycles. This experience offers insight into how food, livelihood, and community intersect, shaping the overall destination experience.

In Tubigon, the narrative has a unique flavor. The careful art of raffia weaving showcases the skill that persists within local communities, serving as a reminder that culture is not just expressed through daily activities but also shapes a place’s identity.

Even at the Chocolate Hills, where visitors usually come for the view, the experience starts to change. The landscape stays the same, but the way people perceive it transforms through local stories, context, and the community that enriches the space beyond its surface.

Together, these stories propose a new approach to exploring Bohol. Community-based tourism enriches the experience by linking visitors with the local people, cuisine, traditions, and surroundings that support the area.
