Enterprise infrastructure is entering a new era. In truth, virtualization was due for a rethink before the cost crisis. In the same HPE survey, only 4% of IT leaders cited cost as the primary driver behind modernization. What changed is that the "VM tax" forced a closer look at a model born in a different era — before today's mix of public and private clouds, hybrid work, shadow IT, edge environments, and AI workloads that demand faster, more flexible infrastructure.
The opportunity is to move beyond reactive optimization and build a more intelligent, adaptable platform for the emerging era of computing.
The shift to unified control
The first strategic shift is to create an infrastructure foundation that can continuously adapt to new demands. Adaptation to cloud computing, hybrid working, edge environments, and AI often happened on the fly, evolving into portfolios of disjointed tools that were never designed to operate as one.
Today's enterprise typically operates a tangle of on-premises servers, supplemented by cloud-based virtual machines and public cloud services, with different branches or teams often using overlapping or duplicated tools — overseen by a mess of observability tools.

With all the manual hand-offs and inter-departmental approvals such complexity implies, service delivery took an average of 80 man-hours per server.

These results are echoed in an IDC survey of IT leaders, which found that similar modernization initiatives achieved up to 90% cost savings on virtualization software, alongside 26:1 reductions in server footprint — saving 50-84% on power and cooling.
Modernization can also help overcome a critical skills gap. Sixty percent of enterprises surveyed by HPE cited a lack of cloud and automation expertise as a top barrier to executing infrastructural initiatives. Unified control planes reduce the need for detailed knowledge of individual solutions.
The strategic value goes beyond savings. IT managers can right-size cloud infrastructure, cull duplicate tools, and apply consistent governance across the enterprise — creating a more dynamic backbone for innovation.
They can also respond more quickly to disruption, scale resource use with greater precision, and absorb new workflows and tools as the business evolves — capabilities that become even more critical as AI moves from experimentation to enterprise-wide execution.
From AI-ready to AI-native
