Discover The Ultimate Holiday Destination In Kansas City’s Historic West Bottoms

Celebrate the season at Kansas City's Historic West Bottoms with festive shopping, music, and a magical tree lighting ceremony.

Kansas City’s West Bottoms will again get in the holiday spirit with its Christmas Bows in the Bottoms. This West Bottoms Christmas Tradition will be held again this year during the First Friday’s Weekend from December 5 to December 7 during the festival of the full moon. This event is particularly special to out-of-towners as guests will get to experience the nostalgic holiday season in the heart of the city’s historic districts. The blend of holiday spirit, vintage style, with the community’s holiday spirit makes this event a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season in the city.

Holidays in the Heart of the City

The historic district is filled with beautiful brick vintage-style buildings, warehouses, and antique shops. The Bows in the Bottoms event combines all the old-style holiday activities with some new ones, making this event a holiday offering something for everyone!

There is a lot to look forward to this year, especially the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, which is one of the annual Christmas events. It will be held on Friday, the 5th of December, starting at 6 o’clock. We will turn on the lights of a Christmas tree that is many stories tall! Michael Pagan, a great jazz piano player, will also be playing holiday music for everyone. And of course, The Grinch and Santa will be around for anyone who wants to say ‘hi’ and take some pictures.

If you really enjoy the lights and the traditional feel of the holidays, you will love this. The streets will have the Christmas lights that twinkle, large bows, and festive decorations on all the shops. The whole area will feel nostalgic, and the lights will glow warmly. It is a great place to make holiday memories, and you will feel like you have been transported to a simpler time. The old-fashioned shops will also provide a great place to do any holiday shopping you need to do!

Shopping and Eating in the West Bottoms

A very popular part of the “Bows in the Bottoms” celebration is being able to buy one-of-a-kind holiday gifts and seasonal goodies. The area features dozens of charming one-of-a-kind boutiques, antique and specialty shops, and fantastic places to find all kinds of treasures.

During the celebration, popular shops like Serendipity and Treasures on 13th, and Bella Patina and Good JuJu, all located in the Bottoms, will open their doors. The shops sell everything from vintage furniture to holiday apparel, jewelry, and decor. Many of the shops participate in the celebration on an occasional basis, so this is a great time to check out the area and all the surprises that are in store. The gift shops are all locally owned and provide a personal touch that is hard to find with the big box and online retailers.

While Shopping At the Bottoms District

While shopping at the West Bottoms District, visitors can dine at one of the many restaurants that will be available, such as Chef J’s Barbecue and Fountain City Winery, which will be offering seasonal fares and treats. One hot coffee at one of the many coffee shops or cafes, housed in the shops for visitors to browse, will warm guests up. Food Trucks, offering various flavorful foods and festive treats, will be stationed at Hickory Street.

Entertainment for the Entire Family

The Full Moon Festival will entertain everyone, as with every Festival. Friday, December 5, from 2 to 6 pm, there will be holiday jazz performed by Michael Pagan, who will be performing his holiday classics. This will be right at the 13 and Hickory corner, and it will be very festive and full of spirit. Santa and Mrs. Claus, and the Grinch will be available for a photo opp and will be strolling around in that same corner on Friday and Saturday, 12 to 6 pm.

If you can’t make the opening weekend, that’s ok! The festive spirit will continue throughout the entire month of December! Santa and the Grinch will return to the district to offer photos and fun on December 13 & 20.
