Vietnam Aviation Soars as Rising Passenger Traffic Fuels Tourism Growth and Major Airline Fleet Expansion
Growth in Vietnam's aviation sector is boosting the country's tourism industry.
Growth in Vietnam’s aviation sector is boosting the country’s tourism industry. The Vietnam aviation industry is seeing significant growth in 2026, thanks to a rise in domestic and international passengers, and more planes in airline fleets. The country’s airports are seeing more passengers and airlines are also increasing capacity to cope with the increase in demand. International aviation is showing particularly strong growth in Vietnam. Domestic aviation is also boosting tourism. More planes are being added to fleets and aviation authorities are also looking to improve flight routes. This means Vietnam is becoming a key aviation and tourism market in South East Asia.
Vietnam Records Strong Growth in Domestic and International Passenger Traffic
Vietnam’s aviation sector has recorded impressive passenger growth, reflecting sustained demand for domestic and international air travel.
According to figures reported by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, international passenger traffic reached 42.8 million, representing an increase of 11.3 per cent.
Domestic passenger traffic also maintained positive momentum, reaching 67.6 million, an increase of 9.5 per cent.
Combined, the two markets accounted for approximately 110.4 million passengers, demonstrating the scale of aviation activity across the country’s airports.
The growth highlights the importance of air transport in connecting Vietnam’s major cities, regional destinations and international travel markets.
Increasing passenger movements also underline the need for sufficient airport capacity, reliable airline operations and efficient transport infrastructure.
International Aviation Demand Strengthens Vietnam’s Tourism Connectivity
International passenger traffic has emerged as an important contributor to Vietnam’s aviation expansion.
With 42.8 million international passengers recorded at airports, overseas travel demand has continued to increase.
This growth provides opportunities for Vietnam’s tourism industry by supporting international connectivity and improving access to destinations across the country.
Major tourism centres depend on reliable air services to connect international visitors with accommodation, attractions and regional transport networks.
However, increasing international traffic has also intensified competition among airlines operating services to and from Vietnam.
Vietnamese carriers are seeking opportunities to strengthen their presence in overseas markets while responding to competition from international operators.
The difference between overall international passenger growth and the performance of domestic airlines indicates that international expansion remains an important opportunity for Vietnamese aviation.
Vietnamese Airlines Carry More Than Fifty Million Passengers
Vietnamese airlines collectively transported 50.1 million passengers, representing an increase of 7 per cent.
Domestic passenger operations accounted for 33.8 million travellers, reflecting growth of 9.5 per cent.
International operations carried 16.3 million passengers, representing an increase of 2 per cent.
Although both segments expanded, domestic operations recorded considerably stronger growth than international services operated by Vietnamese carriers.
The figures also reveal an important distinction between overall airport traffic and passengers carried specifically by Vietnamese airlines.
While international passenger movements at Vietnam’s airports increased by 11.3 per cent, international passenger traffic carried by Vietnamese airlines grew by only 2 per cent.
This difference highlights the competitive environment facing local carriers as they seek to expand their international networks.
Vietnam’s Aviation Fleet Expands to Support Rising Travel Demand
Vietnamese airlines have been increasing their aircraft fleets to accommodate growing passenger demand and prepare for the busy year-end travel period.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the country’s aviation fleet reached 261 aircraft as of 15 October 2026.
This represented an increase of 26 aircraft compared with 2025.
Several airlines have recently received additional aircraft, including Vietjet, Sun PhuQuoc Airways and Vietravel Airlines.
Fleet expansion provides additional capacity for airlines to increase flight frequencies, strengthen existing services and potentially develop new routes.
However, aircraft additions must be supported by efficient scheduling, appropriate route planning and sufficient passenger demand.
Airlines must therefore balance network expansion with operational efficiency to ensure that additional aircraft capacity is used effectively.
Vietjet and Vietnam Airlines Lead Aircraft Fleet Capacity
Vietnam’s two major airlines continue to account for a substantial proportion of the country’s commercial aviation fleet.
Vietjet operated 107 aircraft, primarily consisting of Airbus A321 aircraft.
Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines operated 94 aircraft, including Airbus A320s, A321s and A350s, alongside Boeing 787 aircraft.
Together, these carriers operated 201 aircraft, representing approximately 77 per cent of the reported national fleet.
Their aircraft capacity plays an important role in supporting domestic routes and international connectivity.
Additional aircraft deliveries to other Vietnamese carriers are also contributing to the wider expansion of the country’s aviation market.
The increasing fleet size offers opportunities to improve passenger capacity during periods of heightened travel demand.
Vietnam’s Air Cargo Industry Records Positive Growth
Alongside passenger transport, Vietnam’s air cargo industry has demonstrated positive performance.
Airports handled approximately 1.6 million metric tonnes of cargo, representing an increase of 9.6 per cent.
International air cargo accounted for 1.2 million metric tonnes, recording growth of 15.4 per cent.
However, domestic air cargo volume declined by 7 per cent, highlighting contrasting performance between the two markets.
International cargo operations were therefore the primary driver of overall air freight growth.
The expansion reflects the increasing importance of international air transport connections for the movement of goods.
Air cargo activity also contributes to the broader aviation economy by supporting airport operations and strengthening transport links associated with international trade.
Aviation Authorities Encourage Airlines to Restore Domestic Routes
Vietnam’s aviation authorities are encouraging airlines to strengthen domestic connectivity as passenger demand continues to increase.
Airlines have been urged to review existing domestic networks and consider restoring previously suspended services.
Additional flight frequencies have also been encouraged on routes experiencing strong passenger demand.
These measures aim to improve connectivity between localities while ensuring that available aircraft capacity is allocated efficiently.
Authorities have emphasised that route development should reflect actual travel demand, commercial requirements and operational conditions.
The approach also seeks to align aviation development with tourism, trade and regional transport needs.
Better domestic connectivity could make travel between Vietnamese destinations more accessible while supporting the effective use of existing aviation infrastructure.
Vietnam’s Aviation Growth Supports Future Tourism and Airline Expansion
Vietnam’s aviation performance highlights the relationship between passenger demand, airline capacity and tourism connectivity.
Rising international and domestic traffic demonstrates continued demand for air transport, while fleet expansion is helping carriers prepare for additional passengers.
The aviation industry is also experiencing stronger international cargo activity, although domestic freight operations remain under pressure.
For Vietnamese airlines, the next challenge involves expanding international market participation while maintaining operational efficiency.
Careful aircraft deployment, stronger domestic networks and demand-based flight planning will remain essential.
Vietnam’s aviation sector is booming as the number of domestic and international passengers increases.
The increase in passenger numbers coupled with a burgeoning aircraft fleet will play an important part in boosting the sector and improving tourism links.
With the end of the year travel season upon us, Vietnam has more planes and passengers than ever.
