CER Cargo Acquires Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo to Strengthen European Rail Freight Network
CER Cargo acquires Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC), expanding its presence in Austria and Germany, enhancing Europe’s rail freight connectivity.
CER Cargo Group, a Budapest-based rail freight operator, has secured the acquisition of Wiener Lokalbahnen Cargo (WLC), one of Austria’s prominent rail freight companies. This acquisition follows an open bidding process initiated in May 2024 by WLC’s current owners, Wiener Lokalbahnen (WLB) and Wiener Stadtwerke (WSTW). The deal is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, although the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The acquisition of WLC is a strategic move for CER Cargo, which already operates subsidiaries in southern, eastern, and central Europe. The purchase aligns with CER Cargo’s growth strategy, enabling the company to expand its footprint in key European markets, particularly Austria and Germany, and provide more comprehensive rail freight services across the continent.
Expanding Operations in Austria and Germany
CER Cargo is looking to use the WLC acquisition as a gateway to enhance its operations in Austria and Germany, two vital markets in European rail transport. The company’s leadership sees the deal as a platform to expand services, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen its network across these regions. WLC, with its established infrastructure, rail network, and customer base, is poised to serve as an ideal stepping stone for CER Cargo to grow its European rail freight business.
According to Monika Unterholzer, deputy director general of Wiener Stadtwerke (WSTW), the acquisition ensures that WLC will be integrated into a company with clear strategic plans for its future. “We are pleased to have found in CER Cargo Group a buyer that has shown throughout the entire process that they have ambitious strategic plans for WLC,” she said.
Interoperability Across Europe
One of the key motivations behind the acquisition is CER Cargo’s desire to offer more interoperable rail freight services across Europe. By combining WLC’s operations with its own, CER Cargo aims to provide seamless connections and services that will be more efficient and effective in meeting the growing demand for rail freight solutions across the continent. The integration of WLC is expected to enhance service offerings, streamline operations, and open up new opportunities for cross-border freight transportation.
Laszlo Horvath, majority owner and chairman of CER Cargo, emphasized the broader implications of the deal, noting, “This expansion enables us to offer interoperable rail freight services across Europe, a key step toward improving the efficiency and reach of rail freight on the continent.”
The acquisition comes at a time when rail freight is becoming increasingly important for Europe’s logistics and supply chain networks, especially with the European Union’s push to reduce carbon emissions and shift more goods transport from road to rail.
Plans for Integration and Future Growth
Once the acquisition is complete, CER Cargo plans to fully integrate WLC’s operations into its broader European framework. WLC will continue to operate under its existing name initially, but it will benefit from CER Cargo’s larger resources, expanded infrastructure, and increased capacity. This merger will allow CER Cargo to offer enhanced services, not only in Austria and Germany but also across a broader European network.
The acquisition will likely lead to increased investment in the Austrian and German markets, boosting rail freight capacity and improving service reliability. CER Cargo’s focus on interoperability will help create more integrated rail transport solutions, which is critical as Europe continues to evolve its rail freight system.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Europe’s Rail Freight Sector
The CER Cargo-WLC acquisition is part of a broader trend toward consolidation and expansion in Europe’s rail freight industry. With a growing emphasis on sustainability and efficient logistics solutions, this deal enables CER Cargo to strengthen its position in the competitive European rail sector.
By integrating WLC’s established infrastructure with its own, CER Cargo is positioning itself as a key player in Europe’s evolving transportation network. The future of CER Cargo looks set to be marked by increased cross-border connectivity, improved freight services, and a stronger overall presence in European rail logistics.
