Both Cambodia and China continue to enhance their relations through the launch of an exciting initiative to boost tourism and air travel linkage between them. “Cambodia China Cooperation Plan on Air Services and Tourism Promotion” is the most recent initiative and it was reported earlier this week during the 2nd Tripartite Mechanism Meeting. This initiative goes in hand in hand with the vision of ‘Cambodia China 2025 Tourism Year”. This meeting was attended by key personnel from the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism and the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia discusses response to the Chinese counters to enhance the inbound Chinese tourists along with the transport communication link between both the countries.

The action aim is to institute an efficient and effective system for promoting tourism with sustained focus on air travel between Cambodia and China. The most sought aim in these discussions was the suggestion of establishing many direct flights to Cambodia from major Chinese cities. This imitative will operate additional routs for tourists coming to Cambodia to easily visit Angkor Wat in Siem Reap and also enjoy the lively cities of Preah Sihanouk and Phnom Penh.

Direct flights will simplify travel from China, making it easier for visitors to explore Cambodia, which will promote economic development in both countries. These flights will also help encourage tourists from other sectors along with potential business travel. With the Cambodians set to build newer air routes, they expect tourists from China to help revitalize the local economy, which in turn will influence the Cambodian economy positively.

There’s also the need to protect the image of both countries along with making the whole travel experience smoother. There are plans suggested for developing infrastructure which will streamline the whole travel process. There are also travel and decorators to help polish the reputation of Cambodia. To further ease out the dealings with tourists, there will need to be fully trained support staff that will help enhance the experience for the Chinese tourists visiting Cambodia.

Also central to the strategy is the promotion of investment by Chinese nationals in the tourism industry in Cambodia. In the hospitality and tourism sectors of Cambodia, foreign investment is welcomed and even encouraged through policies and incentives by the government. The action plan further promotes investment by Chinese companies in the building of hotels, resorts, and other tourism-related infrastructure and cultural projects that will enhance the tourism offer in Cambodia. These investments are critical to ensuring the long-term growth and sustainability of tourism in Cambodia.

The meeting also underscored the need to further develop cultural links through tourism. The two countries agreed on the possibilities of initiatives such as Famtrip and film tourism, in which Chinese film directors come to Cambodia to look for places to film because of the unique nature and culture of Cambodia. Such initiatives promote tourism to Cambodia as well as foster greater understanding and cultural exchange between the two countries. The more Cambodia is promoted because of the beautiful places and rich history, the more it will gain attention and visibility in the world.

Preliminary statistics concerning 2025 tourism certainly augur well for Cambodia’s tourism industry. In the first seven months of the year, the Period Chinese visitors to Cambodia was up by 48.2%. Cambodian tourism officials put these new statistics into context, pointing out the increased interesting in Cambodian tourism by the almost 690,000 Chinese tourists already in the country. With increasing visitation, officials believe the new action plan will sustain decreasing macro-economic turbulence by stronger stimulation from tourism.

During the Cambodia-China tourism year, expectations are set for even greater volumes of incoming tourists, cultural exchange, and bilateral dialogue. First, for the bilateral economic ties, the two countries seek to increase the level of tourism and to promote mutual cultural appreciation. The collaboration between the two countries to expand the tourism industry from recently established relations will stand as an example for international partnerships for the two countries.

The two countries remain hopeful that strengthened air links, investment, and quality services will make Cambodia one of the preferred destinations for Chinese tourists. The action plan steps are clear and will promote Cambodia as a Southeast Asia travel hub, leveraging the burgeoning Chinese tourism market.

Widening the air links, improving the tourist experience, and increasing investment to the sector of tourism, this new action plan that Cambodia and China are about to work on is poised to deepen the countries’ tourism cooperation. This new action plan, which on the surface appears to be a minor addition to the relationship between the two countries, is one of the primary gains in this new partnership. The goals which the countries wish to accomplish will prove that the cooperation on tourism will be firmly established and that cultural and economic cooperation will deepen. Undoubtedly, the most set a target for the Year 2025 that will make that year historic in tourism cooperation between the two countries is the “Cambodia – China Year of Tourism.” Every element for growing and nurturing this relationship will be fulfilled in the coming years.
