The 15 best wallets for women, for purse or pocket carrying

We tested slim card holders and spacious bifolds in busy checkout lines. Here are the best women's wallets for secure and stylish organization.

When my last wallet — a trusty bifold I carried for years — finally wore out, I decided it was time for an upgrade. My idea of the best wallet for women is something that complements my leather handbag, and within are enough slots for all the cards and cash I carry on a daily basis.

The best wallets we tested make it easier to navigate busy checkout lines and crowded subway turnstiles. When you pop open your wallet, you shouldn't have to root around to find what you need. Instead, everything is laid out in an intuitive design that lines up with how we handle money in real life.

If you're looking to replace a bulky old wallet with a new slim wallet for yourself or a loved one, consider one that works smarter, not harder. See our guide to the best men's wallets for more of our favorite picks.

How we tested wallets

Three images of the author holding leather women's wallets.

A large portion of these picks are inspired by our guide to the best work bags for women. Just like your work bag, a wallet should feel stylish, come with intuitive design details, and be made with treated leather that can withstand the abrasiveness of busy commutes.

We cumulatively tested 28 women's wallets by rotating them into our daily routines for errands, dinners out, traveling via plane and train, and online purchases. We paid attention to how each wallet fit into different bags, ranging from slim clutches to spacious totes. We tested wallets made for people who carry a lot of cards or cash, as well as those who use Tap to Pay and only need their wallet on occasion. The wallets' layouts determined how easy it was to quickly grab bills, coins, or cards — especially in rushed moments like long checkout lines and TSA checkpoints.

We also compared evaluated material quality, from leather finishes to hardware durability, to see how well the wallets age.

Best overall: Lo & Sons The Leather Wallet

The exaact style of the Magnolia we tested was a stiffer Saffiano leather, although you can also get this Lo & Sons wallet in Nappa or cactus leather. With the Saffiano, the leather has been treated to resist scratches and water damage. The options also include a range of leather-and-metal-zipper combinations. Overall, this is a larger wallet from well suited for those who prefer a maximalist approach to packing a bag. It's sturdy, practical, and luxe-looking sans any major branding details.

Best runner-up: Leatherology Haven Compact Wallet

This feels like a wallet designed for how we actually live now. The layout is smart, with just enough dedicated card slots, a zip coin compartment, plus extra space (for folded bills or extra cards) in the gusseted interior. The Haven has no traditional long bill compartment, but I didn't miss it. I rarely carry cash, and when I did, folding a few bills into the main pocket was easy enough. It strikes just the right balance between spacious and compact.

The leather is soft and clearly high quality. I tested the croc finish, which looks especially elevated, and the envelope shape makes it feel more polished than your average compact wallet. The small details really set it apart, though: Gold D-rings let you attach a strap (sold separately) to wear it as a wristlet or a crossbody, plus optional monogramming (for an added fee) makes it gift-worthy. I've owned a number of leather pieces from Leatherology over the years and have always been impressed with the long-lasting quality, so I'm sure this will be a coveted accessory I use for years to come.

Best slim: Bellroy Apex Slim Sleeve

The Bellroy Apex Slim Sleeve is the only wallet I've used over the last two years. At about two-thirds the length of an iPhone, the sleek profile can even fit in the infamously small pockets of women's pants. Its leather has aged gracefully in the past year that I've used it. Because of its firm leather shell casing, it can be packed full and still feels slim.

The checkout experience is so much easier when your wallet has everything you need in your palm. You can open it using one hand with a side squeeze, making it easy to use for those with limited dexterity. Once open, the wallet's card slots are easy to access and have a pull tab in one of its sleeves. Then, it clasps firmly shut with a gratifying magnetic snap. It's genuinely a pleasure to use and feels worth its cost, and the brand offers a three-year warranty on all of its products. — Gabrielle Chase, senior associate style editor

Best card case: Coach Essential Card Holder Wallet

This Coach wallet is a smart hybrid: two detachable pieces that work together as a compact wallet or separately as two cardholders. Snapped together, it functions like a small wallet complete with five card slots, a flat bill compartment, and a zippered coin purse. When I split them apart, I ended up with two ultra-light options: one with four card slots, and a slimmer piece with a single slot plus a zip pocket.

I appreciated that the main flap closes over the cards, which keeps everything concealed — something a lot of cardholders don't offer. It feels secure, versatile, and easy to scale up or down depending on how much I want to carry. Of course, the smooth letter and gold-tone hardware including Coach's signature C logo add to the appeal.

Best for small purses: Lo & Sons Mallorca Small Wallet

When I'm going out with a small crossbody or clutch, the Mallorca wallet is my go-to. It slides easily into a tiny bag without creating bulk, which is rare for a zip-around wallet. With four card slots, two bill compartments, and a snap coin purse (which I use for keeping my square business cards at the ready), this stiff-leather design has space for all the basics without any unnecessary frills.

That said, there are a few trade-offs. Though I appreciate the added security of the full zipper, it tends to catch at the corners. People who carry a lot of cards will find the storage lacking. Still, for nights out or small bags, it gets the job done.

Best large: Longchamp Le Roseau Long Continental Wallet

For many years, a full-size continental wallet was my daily staple for keeping all of my cards, cash, and even a checkbook secure. Now that so many of our daily transactions have gone completely digital, I mostly carry a more compact option — but I still like to keep a continental wallet on hand for larger shopping trips, special events where I might need more cash or checks, or for domestic travels.

Le Roseau by Longchamp strikes a nice balance between spacious and sleek. The calfskin leather is smooth and refined, and the gold-tone bamboo-shaped clasp is a stylish touch. With 14 card slots, three slip pockets, and a large zip compartment, it holds everything while maintaining a relatively slim profile. Though the card slots were a bit snug at first, they softened up the more I used them.

Best travel folio: Dagne Dover Accordion Travel Wallet

The direct-to-consumer, waste-conscious line is no stranger to organization and pieces for on-the-go, but this Dagne Dover wallet stands out for its looks and function. While it's a much slimmer travel wallet than the other top wallets for women we tested, it still includes six slots for credit cards and one for bills. The magnet closure is also a thoughtful choice as it eliminates fumbling often caused by zippers.

Unlike bulkier travel designs, the Accordion Travel Wallet is also a good size for slipping into everyday handbags, not just larger travel carryalls. Plus, the leather is soft and comes in lovely shades of cream, gray, and blue. You can find more insight into Dagne Dover products in our guide to the best work bags for women and Dagne Dover review.

Best luxury: KAAI Large Wallet

This luxury-grade wallet is pricey, but worth the splurge if you want a wallet that feels as intentional as your purse. The KAAI Large Wallet is made from a smooth Italian calf leather with a matte finish, balancing spacious storage with a slim, streamlined profile.

The sleek shape means you can carry all your essentials without adding bulk to your bag. Inside are 8 card slots, full-length sleeves for bills and receipts, and a convenient coin pocket, keeping everything organized and easily accessible while maintaining a clean silhouette. It's a bit too long to fit in a pocket, so it's best carried in a tote. For a more portable alternative, the Rebel Cardholder has a similar design, only with card slots on the outside.

Best RFID-blocking: Bellroy Travel Wallet

When I travel internationally, I keep my passport secure in a dedicated travel wallet. Stowing my passport with my credit cards, bills, and plane tickets (rather than in a separate passport-only holder) allows me to have all my documents in one secure, easy access location — so I'm not fumbling at the ticket counter or while passing through security checkpoints.

Bellroy has a strong reputation for travel-ready accessories, and this Travel Wallet is intuitively designed to make your trips more seamless. With space for a passport, tickets, cash, and cards, it maintains a slim profile that still fits into a small purse. RFID protection is a thoughtful extra, while a tiny pen that slots neatly inside is handy for filling out customs forms or writing down directions in a pinch. I do wish it had some sort of closure, because when it's packed full, it tends to pop open.

Best hardware detail: Strathberry Mosaic Trifold Wallet

Strathberry's Mosaic wallet is made in Italy with soft calf leather and adorned with antique gold details. Inside the trifold are six card slots, a zippered coin pouch, and a cash compartment, which snaps shut with a metal stud closure. This wallet is one fit for royalty (Strathberry's mid-range luxury fine leather goods are worn by the likes of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle). But fit for royalty doesn't mean it'll fit your pocket — we found the hardware detail a bit too bulky in tight spaces.

Best bandolier: Bandolier Hailey Leather Crossbody

A bandolier is a hands-free way to carry all your essentials in one petite package, which is extra convenient as the best wallet for women to accommodate those infamously tiny pockets on women's jeans. The Bandolier shoulder strap adjusts to generous lengths so you can wear it at whatever height you prefer, and the snap closure carries cards behind the open-face phone case.

Best money clip: Quince Italian Leather Money-Clip Wallet

Quince's direct-to-consumer business model translates from luxury grade materials to competitive prices when you compare to other retailers of top-grain Italian leather goods. One of the best wallets for women who prefer to carry cash on hand, this Italian Leather Money Clip wallet has room for up to eight cards with an ID window packed into a slim, minimalist silhouette.

Best for business travel: Bellroy Travel Folio

The exterior of Bellroy's Travel Folio is smooth and sleek, with a zip-around closure, and RFID-blocking technology. Meanwhile, the inside houses a ton, including at least two passports. The design only includes a couple of card slots and doesn't have a coin purse, but it makes up for these potential inadequacies with its many organization pockets. Some of these slots are even hidden, making this a top wallet for women that safely ensures your belongings never spill out in your carry-on bag. Plus, a super slim pen is included in the center crease, ensuring you always have one on hand to fill out a customs form. Combined, these considerate touches will speak right to the heart of the most organized travelers you know.

Best travel wristlet: Baggallini RFID Currency Organizer

Baggallini makes some of our favorite durable work bags we've tested, and their smaller accessories are the perfect acquaintance for safe-keeping your onboarding necessities. Here there are three color-coded slots, RFID-protected card slots, and a divider for boarding passes and a passport. You can also convert it to a wristlet with its removable strap.

FAQs on the best wallets for women

What should I look for in a wallet?

Size, material, and security features are all key factors in choosing the best wallet for women. If you carry a lot of cash, look for billfolds that measure about 4 inches in height. This will keep them tucked out of sight. Full-grain leather will age gracefully with the proper care. Look for designs with magnetic clasps and zippered closures that seal the wallet shut.

What's the best wallet or women who carry a lot of cash?

If you carry a lot of cash, look for billfolds that measure about 4 inches in height. This will keep US dollars and taller bank notes like British pounds tucked out of sight.

What's the best wallet for women who carry mostly cards?

If you carry many cards — whether they're bank cards, business cards, or IDs — look for wallets with several card slots that are easily accessible, yet still secure. The accordion design on the Dagne Dover Travel Wallet achieves this balance.

Other wallets we tested

An assortment of 10 women's wallets

Longchamp Pocket Card Holder: This spacious but slim cardholder (available in two bright, summery hues) has surprisingly roomy zip compartment, but the exterior flap isn't very secure.

Tumi Belden Travel Wallet: Over-packers will love this extremely spacious zip-around travel case with smart organization, 11 card slots, and a wristlet strap. However, it's too large to fit in most purses and lacks RFID protection.

Furla Continental Wallet: I've personally used a similar version for years — durable, stylish, and still holding up — but it didn't stand out enough in design or functionality to beat newer options.
