Electronic visas (e-Visas) are rapidly transforming the way Indian travellers access international destinations, accounting for 82 percent of all visa applications in 2025, up from 79 percent in 2024. This shift reflects a growing preference for digital solutions that simplify travel planning, reduce wait times, and provide greater certainty for travellers.

A recent report by Atlys, a visa processing platform, highlights how countries worldwide are increasingly adopting digital entry systems to attract Indian visitors. Nations including the UAE, Vietnam, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Egypt have emerged as the most sought-after destinations for Indian e-Visa holders this year, demonstrating both strong demand and the convenience of online application processes.

Digital Visa Expansion Accelerates

The report reveals that more than 50 countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and Latin America now provide e-Visas or electronic travel authorisations (eTAs) for Indian passport holders. This growing network reflects a global recognition of India’s rapidly expanding outbound travel market, which has been steadily rising over the past decade.

Several countries have witnessed particularly strong growth in applications. Sri Lanka, for instance, saw e-Visa applications from Indian travellers surge nearly sevenfold in 2025 compared to 2024. Georgia also experienced a 2.6-times increase, signalling that Indian tourists are increasingly exploring new destinations beyond traditional favourites. The rise in e-Visa adoption has made last-minute trips, short-haul travel, and multi-country itineraries far more manageable, reflecting the demand for flexibility among modern travellers.

Regional Trends in E-Visa Adoption

Asia continues to lead in digital entry options. Countries such as Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Indonesia offer e-Visas with stay durations ranging from 14 to 90 days. Vietnam allows 30-day visits with e-Visas valid for 90 days, catering to both leisure and business travellers.
Africa is rapidly expanding digital access, with Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Morocco offering stays between 30 and 90 days via e-Visas. This trend has been driven by a desire to attract Indian tourists, who are emerging as a major source of international travellers.
Europe is increasingly accommodating Indian visitors with online visa applications. Countries like Albania, Moldova, and Russia have integrated digital processes, making travel smoother and more predictable.
Latin America and the Caribbean are embracing e-Visas, with Cuba, Suriname, Colombia, and the Bahamas implementing comprehensive digital entry systems.
Oceania, including Australia and New Zealand, continues to refine e-Visas and eTAs, ensuring easy access for Indian travellers to these destinations.

The growing reliance on e-Visas underscores a broader trend in outbound travel from India: convenience, speed, and certainty are now top priorities. Digital visas remove the traditional hurdles of paper-based applications, allowing travellers to plan trips spontaneously and make last-minute arrangements. Short-haul travel and regional trips, in particular, have benefited from this shift, offering greater flexibility for modern travellers.
