2025 Rankings: Atlanta Retains Top Spot, Dubai Sees Rapid Growth in Global Airport Rankings

Atlanta keeps its title as the world’s busiest airport in 2025, while Dubai continues to close the gap with robust capacity growth, according to OAG data.

As per the latest statistics released by OAG Aviation Worldwide, in 2025, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta held the title of the world’s busiest airport with a scheduled capacity of 63.1 million seats. This landmark event highlights the steady supremacy of Atlanta in terms of both domestic and international flights. While the Dubai International Airport (DXB) is in the second place, it has also consistently decreasing the distance to ATL by having a 4% increase in capacity for the last year. The rise of capacity at Dubai is a strong indication of its being the main international hub of the world.

Growth Trends Across Global Airports

In addition to the continued dominance of ATL, the OAG rankings reflect substantial global growth in aviation capacity, driven by the strengthening of large domestic markets, such as the United States and China, as well as expansion in regions like the Middle East. Dubai International, with 62.4 million seats, is rapidly closing the gap with ATL, showing a year-on-year growth of 4%. Compared to 2019 levels, Dubai’s capacity surged by 16%, reinforcing its central role in international travel. This growth has been a key factor in Dubai’s ability to maintain its position as the world’s busiest international hub.

Among the top ten busiest airports worldwide, four are located in North America and three in Asia, demonstrating the significance of major domestic markets as well as the continued rise of new international hubs. Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) secured the third spot with 55.4 million seats, maintaining stability in its capacity and slightly surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

Impact of Domestic Markets and New Hubs

The rankings also highlight the resilience of the U.S. domestic market. Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Istanbul Airport (IST) saw the most significant year-on-year growth, increasing their capacities by 8% and 6%, respectively. Istanbul’s rapid expansion marks it as one of the fastest-growing major international hubs, with capacity now 22% higher than in 2019. This reflects the strategic role Istanbul is playing in connecting continents, particularly as a vital transit point between Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Ongoing Expansion Across Global Hubs

The continued growth of Dubai and Istanbul signals an evolution in global airline networks. Dubai‘s sustained capacity increases reflect the city’s ambition to strengthen its position as a leading global travel hub. With increasing demand for international travel, Istanbul has capitalized on its strategic location, offering more global flight options and improving its status as a central connection point for travellers.

According to OAG Chief Analyst John Grant, the trends reflected in the 2025 rankings indicate that global aviation is entering a new phase of recovery and expansion. The continued dominance of large domestic markets like the U.S. remains fundamental, while the rise of Dubai and Istanbul illustrates the shifting focus towards international connectivity.

The Role of Regional Hubs in the Post-Pandemic Era

The global rankings also reflect the growing prominence of regional airports that serve as critical international hubs, such as Tokyo and Istanbul. These hubs cater to both long-haul international flights and regional connections, making them crucial in the recovery and expansion of global travel networks.

As air travel continues to grow, Dubai and Istanbul will likely remain at the forefront of international travel, further reshaping the landscape of global aviation. The rising capacities of these hubs suggest they will continue to attract more international passengers, providing travellers with additional convenient flight options.

Atlanta’s Continued Leadership and Dubai’s Growth Trajectory

In 2025, Atlanta Airport is still going to be the world’s busiest airport, yet Dubai has made strides in its ranking and is almost on par with it, which is a manifestation of the changing trends in the airline industry. Istanbul and other up-and-coming regional hubs are becoming more significant in the upcoming global air travel scenario. For the customers, this translates into the opening up of more international routes, the improvement of connectivity, and a larger selection of options when going to different places around the globe.
